I'm redecking my 1988 20' Safari. I just bought Decking, Carpet, 3 36' Bench Seats, Capt Chair, Capt Stand, Corner Unit and a new Bimini all for less than $3k. The Boat will be practically new!

Thanks for joining the mix, I'm trying to get more folks on the board. As for enclosures, your best bet is to have them customer made. It is next to impossible to find any standard enclosures due to the fact that nothing is ever standard on pontoon boats. The railing is off by two inches here, the hard top might be set back an inch on one side, etc. We tried to handle close out mooring covers and enclosures several years back and ended up getting stuck with 2 semi loads of unsaleable merchandise because nothing ever fit. I would think a local canvas shop would be able to make you one up quick at a fair price. Also, if you let me know the boat's brand I could get you the info and you could try to contact them. Sometimes you get lucky and the builder will have some, though most pontoon mfgs stayed away from the full enclosure business until recently.

Rebuilding a 28 footer, i plan on using it in flats in fla. but was wondering
why no on takes them sea side , what are the safty issues on salt water use? what is the major differance in a cat and a pontoon? Cat and pontoons seem to be the same , is it the fact of pontoons are on top of the water and not drafting in the water?

That is an excellent question and hopefully we'll get some more folks from Florida to talk about this. One of the main reasons you don't see alot of pontoon boats used on the actual ocean is probably due to the water conditions. I would think that the larger waves and actual movement of the ocean would put tremendous stress on your standard pontoon boat. The majority of pontoon boats, while extremely well built would have difficulty standing up to the roughness of the actual ocean. I'm not too familiar with Cats but I'm assuming the main difference is that Cats have fiberglass hulls. Your standard pontoon boats use aluminum tubes and until recently older pontoon boats used small diameter pontoons, less than 20". Today's pontoon boats use 23-27" pontoon tubes but their underlying construction just isn't strong enough compared to fiberglass hulled Cats or boats. Pontoon Boats are basically just 2 tubes connected with aluminum cross members and marine plywood holding it all together. While they are great for calm waters I would think they'd provide a very rough and uncomfortable ride on the ocean. Anyone take their pontoon boat out in the ocean before, how do they hold up?

My husband & I spent much of the last 2 1/2 years rebuilding a 1984 Lowe 28' double deck pontoon. It was a total mess when we towed it home. But with new marine plywood, carpet & a seating it's was well on it way to recovery. but last January my husband of 25 years passed away after a long battle with lung cancer. His last wish was that I get the pontoon finished and take it out on the beautiful lake we live on here in South Texas. I need to find a center pod w/ transom to complete the re-build - someone who thought he was helping weaked the transom & it won't support my 4 stroke Suzuki engine. The only place I've found that has the center pod w/transom is in Canada and the freight costs almost as much as the pod. Anyone out there know of a dealer here in the good old USA?

Are you referring to the aluminum transom that bolts to the support cross channels of the pontoon boat and the engine mounts to the back of the transom? I just want to make sure, we have these in stock but have kept them off the website until we found a better supplier. I am currenty on vacation but will email you photos of our transoms when I return on the 17th. The cost is $195, however, it needs to ship via semi and I will need your zip code to determine freight costs. I am sorry to hear of your husbands passing. Hopefully we'll be able to help you.

Does anyone know where I can find a miniature replica of a pontoon boat? Either a model that can be built or just a mini version of the real thing? A friend wants the boat for his birthday and since his girlfriend can't afford it yet, she wanted to buy him a model to stare at every day until he can make the big purchase himself. Any ideas???

i just found this site i own a 1996 partykraft 20 ft pontoon boat since new . I want to share an idea i used on my boat .
to store anchor line off the deck I bought a deck pipe from local marine dealer . mounted it about 6" behind the cup holder on foward port
side next to rail. I made a round spacer 1/2" plywood the dia of the.deckpipe ,with a hole the inide dia. of same .the seat end is plastic
and hollow I store 100' of 1/2 " anchor line in a space that was useless
until now. feed the line in it feeds out with out getting tangled and nobody needs to move if it was stored under a seat
hope you and others can use this idea.

We live out here in the Wild West where pontoons are as scarce as hen's teeth. Our friends in Utah purchased an old Kennedy pontoon and fixed it up. We have spent many a wonderful day fishing on their roomy, comfortable boat. We have been looking long an hard for a pontoon that we too could enjoy. There just aren't any in our area of the country. Finally, we were able to find one in Denver. We are now the proud owner of a 1984 Godfrey Aqua Patio, 24 ft. and we are thrilled with it. It's in pretty fair shape but we would like to take it the rest of the way and make it look as close to new as possible. All of the furniture is in good shape (don't know it the seats are original) but several have square openings, obviously for inserts for drink holders etc. Where can we find these things. I have contacted Godfrey but really doubt that they carry these items for a 20 year old boat. Also what is the best type of bimini awning, vinyl or polyester?

Are you looking for the plastic cup holders to insert into the seating? We carry them and I'll get them up on our webiste ASAP and post the link for you. Also, that is a great question concerning vinyl vs. polyester. Up until recently we've always sold just straight vinyl bimini tops. However, once we built our website I realized we need to switch to a polyester top and offer an white vinyl. The main reason is perception, people just seem to view polyester as being superior to vinyl. Vinyl is a heavier material and it a bit easier to clean, however, it is not uniform in color. Vinyl canopies are colored on the top and havea grayish almost denim like backing underneath. The fact that the vinyl tops are not the same color on top as they are on the bottom is really their biggest draw back. A polyester top is ligher weight, is more water resistant but more importantly it is the same color on the top as it is on the bottom. If you look at the bottom picture it shows you the bottom side of the top, it matches the top side. Another reason vinyl tops used to be so popular was the fact they were less expensive than polyester. That is not really the case any more, the vinyl tops almost cost as much as the polyester ones and as pontoon boats have become more luxurious the builders switched to materials they thought the customer would view as a premium item.

I am planing on redoing the furniture only on a '95 Fisher Freedom 200/Fish.
A large (app. 30" x 36" x 30") storage box with hinge lid next to the couch is plywood and in fair condition, I would like to replace with same in vinyl core rather than recover.
Anything in your store to do this ?

I'm afraid we would only be able to sell you the matching vinyl (vinyl that matches our seats). I'm not quite sure what you mean by "replace the same in vinyl core". Are you looking to put new pontoon seating on the boat?

I,m rebuilding a1990 21 foot Bass Buggy and have been looking up info for redecking and your site fits the bill. Is there any coatings you would recommend for application on the wood prior to covering w/ vinyl or carpet to ensure the wood is sealed.

If you are using the proper marine plywood which is CCA treated 3/4" marine plywood that has been kiln dried and pressure treated you don't need to touch it. Don't apply any chemicals, water repellants or paints to the plywood. CCA treated marine plywood is already prepared, all you need to do is glue down your carpet. However, if you are just using regular lumber yard decking I've heard that treating it with some sort of water repellant like Thompson's Water Seal works well. The problem with regular plywood is the chance that is might be treated in a manner reffered to ACQ, this process removes the arsenic which is in marine plywood (it is a superior preservative). The new ACQ plywood will leak out a chemical over time that will eat away at your marine plywood and deck hardware (I think it is a copper compound). This is why it is important to use CCA treated plywood only. Hopefully someone board members will jump in on this, I think Toonfishin may be of some help to us on this question.

Thanks for the prompt reply on the decking material coatings (or lack thereof). As to what type of decking we will be using, we are going to order a decking kit from you in the next day or two as soon as we decide on the color scheme for the boat. A previous entry addressed painting the side panels on a sun tracker boat and I haven't seen the reply on that yet. My wife and I want to paint the side panels on our suntracker also, have I just overlooked the answer or are you still researching?

I have not found an substantial info on paint the aluminum paneling though I would think any exterior type paint would work. You can either have the panel sandblasted or maybe just clean them up, hit them with a primer then paint. Here is a website that deals in marine paint.....it's www.marine-paint.com

Hi Terry
You should have some luck removing the decals from your pontoon boat rails using a heat gun, any will do. I think you can get them at Lowe's or HD for around $20. I would think the heat gun and a small flat edge would take them off quickly.
Anyone else run into this? Any compounds that work good?

I am thinking of rebuilding a 28 ft pontoon. I already have it torn down to the bare bones(wasnt much there to save). Does anyone know where I can get new fencing for the sides. JUST FOUND THIS SITE, WHAT A FIND. i BOUGHT AN 87 PLAYBOUY YACHTSMAN, 24' ALL ORIGINAL, GREAT SHAPE, THE LOGS ARE IN PERFECT SHAPE. IT HAD A HARDTOP ON IT BUT I COULDN'T HANDLE THE SWAY FROM PASSING BOATS. THE TOP WAS MOUNTED ON TOP OF THE RAILS AND PRESENTED A STRAIN ON THE RAIL MOUNTS. SO I SOLD THE HARD TOP. I ALSO SOLD THE OLD 73 90 HORSE JOHNSON AND REPLACED IT WITH A 93 EVINRUDE 90 HORSE. I MOUNTED A MOTOR MOUNTED TROLLING MOTOR SO I COULD USE THE HELM FOR STEERING. NOW I AM LOOKING FOR A DOUBLE BEMINI, I DIDN'T SEE ONE ON PONTOON STUFF. THE DECK SEEMS IN GOOD SHAPE BUT I AM NOTICING A BUBBLE FORWARD AND STARBOARD. THE UNDER SIDE LOOKS ALMOST NEW. MY PROBLEM IS THERE IS THE ELECTRIC IS ALL RAN DIRECTLY TO THE BATTERY. I HAVE 1 STARTER BATTERY, TWO 12 VOLT LINKED FOR THE TROLLING MOTOR , ONE FOR THE LIVEWELL I MADE FROM A 160 QT COOLER AND ONE FOR THE STAND ALONE BAIT KEEPER. ANY IDEAS? I FISH FOR STRIPERS, CRAPPIE AND CATFISH AND I USED TO KEEP MOST OF THE TACKLE IN THE HARDTOP, NOW I NEED AN IDEA FOR STORAGE OF THE TACKLE(12 RODS AND REELS) THANX FOR ANY IDEAS

Pontoon boat aluminum hardtops are increasingly difficult to find. The majority of pontoon boat manufacturers stopped using the aluminum hardtop for regular production years ago and switched to the bimini or canopy style tops you see today. However, the hardtops are coming back. The majority of pontoon boat builders are introducing lines with these stationary hardtops and even with the old Sun Deck style tops that you can climb up on and use to sunbath. The main difficulty in puchasing a hardtop for your pontoon boat is the shipping. They just cannot be shipped easily so your best bet is to contact a local marina and see if they can locate one for you or if they have one on an older pontoon boat that may be in their yard.
Of course if you are in IN, MI, OH or IL contact us directly as we do carry them though you'd need to pick it up at our warehouses.

Just found your web site. Have found the answer to lots of questions. Still have a question. I am redecking an 1988 24' Aqua Patio. I had to replace only 1 sheet of plywood, but now I can not find the flat bolts that hold the plywood to the crossbeams. Do you know where these can be purchased?

I have a 20' sweetwater pontoon boat and recently removed everything from the cross members and with pontoon cleaner, sprayed the pontoons andcross members and all is perfectly clean. Now, the (tongue and groove) plywood is pressure treated 3/4 , sealer applied to the bottom and sides. Now the boat was leveled and squared. The mentioned wood was carefully installed and looks great. Water beads off from underneath. Before doing the mentioned job, I checked with pontoon boat builders and this is what the majority told me to do and they have never had a return for bubbles or curling. I tried to get 5-sheets of marine and the price was (locally) about $85-110 apiece. The pressure treated was$32. I checked on line and the price was $65.00 I don't know the shipping charges. I would have to consider the price, use, storage location (in the h2o) 24-7 , that would justify the extreme price for the wood. Any comments ? Thank for the time.

I am familiar with the method you are referring to, using pressure treated plywood and sealing it. However, new pontoon boat builders use only CCA treated 7-ply, 3/4" marine grade boat panel. The main difference is the treatement process and the quality of the lumber. The sealent is only going to last so long and if you use the improperly treated plywood, ACQ treated vs. CCA treated the copper in the ACQ lumber will leak out over time, eat the marine backing off your carpet and begin deteriorating any aluminum that it comes into contact with. It really is some nasty stuff! The other major benefit of true marine grade decking is the top layer (face) quality, there are no voids in the inner plys, the top surface is completely sanded smooth and all imperfections have been cut out and replaced with inserts to provide a perfect surface for adhesive by the marine carpet and glue. True marine plywood will also never rot or warp on you, whereas the $32 stuff will over time. The arsenic used in CCA treated plywood is far superior to the replacement copper compound found on ACQ treated lumber. The new treatment rules were handed down by the EPA, kind of like taking the lead out of paint only they do allow some plywood to be treated the old way which is CCA. In all honesty it is worth spending the extra money, you don't want to do this ever again. Once you re-deck the boat with CCA marine plywood it's good for 50 years. Standard pressure treated lumber will last you 5-10 sometimes less.

Nathan; in response to your question about sides for pontoons; when refinishing my 28ft Landau whose sides had several tears and the decals were peeling, I redid them myself. If the rails (1 1/4" aluminum) are in good shape they can be cleaned using scotchbrite and some aluminum cleaner. I actually had to have one of mine re welded where it had broken off at the gate attachment. Remove the sheet aluminum from the rails by drilling out all the rivets holding it on with a 1/8th inch drillbit. Use the removed skin as a pattern to make new panel pieces. You can purchase 18" 0r 24" vinyl coated aluminum roll sheeting from a home supply store, the stuff that is used to trim exterior windows,doors and overhangs. I used a type that was coated with vinyl on both sides; white on one and gray on the other. Roll the vinyl out on a long table and use the old material as a pattern to cut it and mark the holes for the rivets. Take care in marking and drilling the 1/8" holes for the rivets as the old metal may have stretched or in my case tore some of the holes. The aluminum cut easily with tin snips. The new pieces are easily riveted back to the rails with 1/8" aluminum rivets. I went to a vinyl sign shop nearby and had him cut me coordinating color stripes over varying widths in 8 ft. length sheets and I applied them myself. The whole replacement cost me less than $200 and about 30 hours of work. The only setback is that parts of the rivets that are drilled out in the rails that are welded on both ends stay in and cause a little rattling sounds at times when the boat is underway.

Just wanted to respond to terry about removing old decals. Goo-gone does not work that great for removing stickers or pin striping. (Tried it and did not work) If your refinishing the sides, a good old can of brush on paint stripper works like a charm. Trust me you will spend about 2-5 hours scraping with goo-gone on one panel, when in 15-20 mins you can do a whole panel or just a small area. Be careful though this stuff will strip it to the bare aluminum.
I did a 1975 20 foot Waco Aloha pontoon rebuild this way and it cut my time from weeks into days in stripping, sanding and repainting. Good luck to all on rebuilding, it's hard work but worth it. My toon may be thirty years old but it looks better than half of the used 5-10 yr old toons for sale at the dealers selling for 5-10K. You can do it!

I looking for a heavier transom for my 20 ft. Pontoon boat, it is a godfery sweetwater 1994 sw2019. I want to put on a 75 hp 4 stroke motor. Godfrey said the present tramson in not heavey enought.

First of all let me just say...what an awesome site! A friend and I are considering refurbing a 1977 pontoon. Our intent is to sell it afterwards. My concern is wether I'll be able to sell it profitably afterwards just do to the age. We figure on having aprox $3,000 to $3,500 in it and hoping to sell it for around 6k. It will be basically new from the deck up. I realize that many factors (ie time of yr, region, ect) will determine in price as well. My concern is wether a bank will loan $$ on a 30 yr old boat even though its been refurbished??

Can you provide any options for mounting a trolling motor on the bow, other than the standard deck mounting, which is in the way of the bow gate and seems to be most objectionable to the wife? I have some ideas regarding the use of a standard transom mounted motor on the bow but it will require adding structure and there is a problem with the trailer when the boat is bunked. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
By the way, I like the idea of having a place where deck sailors can exchange info and ideas.

Ok this might open some eyes here I have an 18 foot bass buggy (late 80s I think) not sure the year but my issue is I have water in the pontoons I believe it has been in there for a long time. I am looking for an easy way to remove the water. I am considering cutting a one and a half inch hole in the front and back chambers to siphon out the water then seal the holes with a rubber expanding plug. What are the issues here and what might any of you recommend. I just redecked the boat a couple years ago and its solid so I am trying to avoid removing the deck to drop the logs!

About the water in the pontoons You will probably have to find a weld shop you will have to drill your toon and find the leak and have it welded buy someone who can weld aluminum.

Wondering if anyone knows of a site that sells do it yourself upholstery kits or just the backs and bottoms of seats. Don't need the base or the arms, they are in great shape. The prices I am getting for re-upholstery are about as much as purchasing new seats.
Also will going to a 4 blade prop help in speed or pulling verses a standard 3 blade for a 70 HP outboard.

I live in central Fla. and use my tooner in open water frequently. Being only 16 Ft I feel comfor-

I've got a 1987 Grumman 24' Pontoon. I want to keep it but can't seem to find anything to work on it. The back of the pontoons don' have a place to mount my fishfinder
sending unit. One door hinge is broke and it's the kind that lifts and opens, can't find one and as far as the seats and carpet I don't mind paying the price for them if I can get the hinges and find out how to hook up the fishfinder behind the pontoon. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am in the process of replacing the water pump, removing the oil injection, and replacing the transom on a 1990 24' Tracker Party Barge, w/ 110 Johnson. Does anyone know if I should just sandwich two peices of marine grade playwood together to make a transom? The old one is rotted. Also any thoughts on removing the oil injection system, and replacing it with a regular fuel pump? I have heard the oil injection was not designed well and can fail....

Ok Everyone - Anybody have any thoughts on this one. I started tearing down my 22' Safari last night. Went amazingly fast. Trim, Fence, Seats, Table, Capt Chair were all removed in 3 hours.
I pealed back most of the carpet to access the condition of the decking. It is solid with no rot (the boat is an 88). The only thing I can find is that in some places, the top layer of the plywood (original) is slightly delaminiating, puckering or uneven. I'm not sure how to describe it.
Thoughts? Should I take the Big Jump and replace the decking?

I just purchased a used pontoon and the console and drivers bench are right in the middle of the boat so there isn't room for benches on either side. I am thinking of moving the drivers bench about 8 to 10 inches to one side so I can put a bench seat on the side. There is a hole for a live well under the drivers bench seat. Will this work and is this a good idea?

I am redoing a Twin Alum boat...found all my seating needs here on your site today, however, I need a canopy. What you may know is that the Twin Alum canopy frames went all the way down to the deck. The reason is the rail systems are not hearty enough to have a newer Bimini style mount to the top of the rail frame. I'm having difficulty locating a resource for the appropriate style framing/cover for this boat...can you help?

Ah ha, now I finally understand. We had a customer in today who mentioned his canopy frame went to the deck and I had no idea as to why. Of course, the old style railing could not support the framework and top. Learn something new everyday and here I thought I was suppose to be the pontoon boat master:) lol
I'm afraid we cannot help with the framework but our universal fit replacement bimini top fabric may work on your existing top. I've never seen the top you describe so I'm not sure where you can purchase a new one. I have a lowe suncruiser pontoon 20 foot. I am looking at replacing the carpet with a vinyl floor covering floor. I have seen the newer models of Pontoons and they look great and are skid resistant and easy to clean. Being in the Keys is tough on carpets especially with finshing and snorkeling and the constant sun. Does anyone know where I can get the components to replace the carpet with a marine grade flooring like they use with the newer models being sold. I imagine the process for doing the job is similar to doing the carpet. Also I have corner klets that are broken and the rivits used for the door hinges are busted. I checked out poontoon stuff.com for these items and do not see them there.

To Jerry of argojerry, I too have a hardtop pontoon made by Lowe. I believe that it is a "28 Regency Blue" 1991 model. The deck is in excellent condition and we have just painted the sides and the "toons". I am in Mobile, AL and wonder if you have made you trip from Chattanooga? I also am looking for some specs and original layout of seating, Lowe boats web site stinks and they have not responded to four attempts to "contact Us" but I am sure that is becasue they just want to sell new boats. Did you have new enclosures made for the snaps that seem to be every where on mine? Anyone else out there know where I can find specs and or parts for this boat?

I live in a no wake lake community. All of the boats are pontoon boats and most have a hard top/sun deck where the kids like to sit on and jump off in to the lake etc. New boats with sun decks are very expensive and used boats with sun decks are virtually impossible to find. Does anyone know of a company that might make kits to retrofit on an existing boat to add a sun deck? Surely there's a market for that sort of thing, but I can't seem to find it. That way, I could buy a used Lowe or Suntracker and add the hardtop. Any help would be appreciated.

I am recarpeting my 24' pontoon, and the carpet refuses to come up. I have tried to buy scrapers to scrape it off, but the carpet refuses to come off. When it does come it only comes off with little pieces and still leaves a lot on the boat. Any sugestions on how to get it off?

I am re-doing the sides of a 1991 Sun Tracker (party cruiser) 32' it has a cabin 12x8' w/4 windows, a/c, pressure water shower & porta-potty and 4kw Gen Set.Etc. all good.
My problem is I cant find the material for the sides of the cabin. The originals were made of a foam board with a very heavy plastic covering on both in & outside.
They just fell apart when the top (roof) rotted. the roof has been replaced and was no problem but the sides are another thing.
Tracker just laughed at me when I ask if they were in stock, their comment was "that boat is way to old for us to stock parts for"
Would it be an unsightly thing if I did it in T-111 siding and painted it ? I live on a busy waterway in Virginia Beach, VA. and dont want to hear "whatenellisthatthing" to often.
also need 1" Sq tubing in 6' or 8' lengths with a 90 degree curve on some pieces to make a permanant top 8x9' for front deck.

We are redoing a Riveria Pontoon and have purcased most seats, console, carptet, etc. from you. You have provided excellent service and have been helpful. We are having trouble replacing hardware. Where can we find the aluminum stove bolts for fastening on the rails and flooring around the deck? We need 3/8" x 4 1/2" , 5/16" x 3 1/2 and self-locking nuts for both. Could someone tel me how to clean and get all the build up off of the pontoons.
To the comments about water in logs ... We had this problem with an '83 Lowe. I contacted the company to find out if there were compartments in the logs, floatation, etc. No compartments but floatation. At the top rear of the waterlogged pontoon we drilled a 1/2 inch hole. I used a sharpened 1/2" length of pvc pipe to "hand drill" through the styrofoam and, once through the floatation, hooked the PVC (cleared of styrofoam particles) to a 12 volt areator pump and pumped the water from the log. Took some priming. All of this while boat is setting in the lake. We then used a circular plate with a threaded center and matching plug. The plate was sealed to the top of the pontoon (Lowe's are flat on top but I think a rubber plug would work on round pontoons) with silocone and the plug with teflon tape. With partitioned pontoons one could make the hole offset enough from top dead center and use 1/2" clear tubing to get a proper bend to the bottom of the toon. With a good seal you could then pressurize the toon or compartment, watch for bubbles, put on your swimming togs, mark the leak with a grease pencil and haul her to a welder to fix it.

Cleaning pontoons. Earlier in this blog is a reference to a product called Oxy-Solv. You can find it at www.boatsupplies.com. $22.50 per gallon. One gallon does 200-300 square feet. A 24' pontoon has slightly less than 140 square feet of surface. I haven't used it but a friend has and it did, indeed, do the trick. It will not erase pitting but it do eat the scum and minerals. I've seen the results. Brush or roll it on, let it set and rinse it off. Biodegradeable, they say. But my buddy said he didn't have to wear a respirator to apply.

Regarding sources for Rednecking Pontoons ... the most valuable source for reclaiming materials to redneck a pontoon, for me, has been the person who services our school with entry rugs, mop heads dust mops, etc. Thinking about it, he visits every kind of manufacturing facility on a weekly basis. By striking up a friendship I have found: 1) a 24' pontoon boat with huge toons and a Chrysler 70 outboard, steering and motor controls which I purchased for $400 2) An economical aluminum welder with an outstanding reputation who works out of his garage for a fraction of yellow pages ads and 3) a source for 1 1/4" aluminum salvaged tubing at cost.
This person servicing our school services businesses and shops all over the Ozarks and knows who does what and what their reputation is.

I have a 22' MMS pontoon that I am restoring. It has an open rail fence around the boat. Do you know where I can get solid side panels or something that may bolt to the railing to enclose the deck?
Also I get a great deal of water splashing onto the front of my deck. My boat stays in the water 24/7 and it is heavy salt brackish. The marina near me says that I can't weld any type of "flare" to my tubes to divert the water since it has been in salt water. They say the welds won't hold. Is this true? And does anyone have any suggestions for this problem. I am trying to see if maybe there is something I can bolt right to my deck and get the same result as a welded flare.

I've stripped down my boat to the deck and the deck looks really good. I ordered the carpet glue from this site but I only ordered 1 Gallon... I have an 8 x 18' boat. Will that be enough?
Also, there is something missing from the steering. I have the main sterring shaft assembly and the steering wheel but no brackets or anything. Is it easier to just buy another kit for about 150?

My 1999 Tracker Party Barge 18 was hard thrashed after 4 years on Lake Mead. I repolaced the Mercury 75 Force with a Mercury 90 Force. I replaced the 18' x 22" Pontoons with some scratch 'n dent 20' x 23" Pontoos. I added about 100 10-32-1/2" machine screws because the self tapping screws holding the aluminum dura-deck were starting to loosen. The boat now runs at 35mph or better, which isn't bad for a pontoon boat. One thing I never anticipated, I get twice the fuel economy now... more flotation, motor just loafing... Just got back from 3 weeks in the swamps, bayous, lakes, and intracoastal waterways of Louisiana. Awesome handling in the big lakes in stormy weather, runs rock steady thru 5' swells at 25mpg. I stopped about 100 yards short of entering the gulf. I don't trust that salt water on the aluminum, I think your just askiing for trouble. Looks like new upholstery is next on the agenda, meanwhile, I'm planning my next trip to Havasu middle of June.

This is an awsome site! I just found it today. I'm rebuilding a 28' Suntracker Party Barge 1988 model. I'm sure I will be giving Pontoonstuff some of my money. I stripped the boat down to the cross members and I've started rebuilding it. I got lucky and came up with 6 sheets of 1/4" aluminum to deck it with so I wont be needing deck ever again. I built a new transome out of a material called "Textolite", any industrial supply should have it. This also, should never have to be replace again. My question is, I need a book lesson or some sort of reference in wiring my new boat. I'm mechanically pretty good but when it comes to wiring I'm real "challenged". I'd appreciate any ideas.

My boat had the carpet run al the way to the edge of the decking. You'll have to remove the railing and take the trim pieces off to do the carpet the right way I think but different manufacturers may do different things. I'm no expert by any means.

Hello...glad I found you guys! I'm Mike....I've just bought a steel frame pontoon boat. I have no idea of manufacturer. It's about 17 feet long or so the pontoons themselves are constructed of steel. There are some holes which have been repaired with some kind of bondo type material. The boat has been sitting for 10 years so some of it is starting to come off. I have it in the water. The boat has a 33 hp johnson outboard motor on it that seems to pull the stern down into the water a bit. It didn't go down any deeper over a 36 hour period so even though I suspect it will still leak it's not a serious one. Which brings me to my question. Have you ever heard of filling the pontoons themselves with some kind of buoyant material? Someone said that styrofoam in them would solve the leak problem forever. Have you ever heard of this? I only paid $350.00 for the whole thing including the motor! Motor runs like a top after I replaced the solenoid ($25.32).

Thanks Richard, I did some more digging around and the carpet does indeed go under the trim. The only way I can see to remove the trim is to drill out all of the pop rivets that are holding the trim to the frame. Does anyone know if this would be the correct procedure?

Finished the rebuild on my 24' JC and she went back in the water last weekend!
It was definitely a labor of love (two full months after work and on the weekends and about 20 cases of beer!) but she is certainly beautiful now and rides out wonderfully. Special thanks to Jeff, my neighbor man...I couldn't have done it without him.
I wanted to say thanks to Jim (the pontoon guy) and all the bloggers for their suggestions and information. This site has been a great resource.
Some things I found...the guy that trailored my boat (he's in the pontoon business)said they use "The Works", toilet bowl cleaner, to clean the toons on the boats they clean. Said it makes them shine like new. I have not tested this.
I went to a local sign manufacturing shop. They have the vinyl decals that all the kids are putting on their cars. They have catalogues or they can manufacture one you design. I also bought a piece of scrap sign material from them (a piece of plastic sandwiched between thin sheets of white anodized aluminum) to use to match the segments on the new rail I had manufactured. These shops in your area may be able to help those of you needing these materials.
I'll check in periodically but I'm back on the water!!! Woohoooo!

We need 1 or 2 pontoon boats that are under $1000, preferably with a decent size engine that we could fix up and put some sort of cabin on. This is my first visit to the blog, and I have comment and a related question. I read Ken's question about taking a pontoon out into the Gulf.
This is the comment part: I used to have a dive shop, and a resort dive operation I knew of back in the '70's' used pontoon dive boats way out in San Salvador in the eastern Bahamas. These were great boats, but the secret to their seaworthyness was fiberglass pontoons. These boats would get up on top and go! The pontoons were shaped like boats, not displasement tubes. Trouble is, while I remember them being built somewhere in the northeast, I can't remember the manufactured name.
This is the question part: Why are aluminium tube pontoons so dominant in the field, and fiberglass boat shape pontoons so hard to find? I found two current manufacturers; Southern Star & Windsor, but could not find any used boats.
I sure would appreciate any feedback on this subject.

We have just purchased a 1976 Crest pontoon boat. The frame for the top is a stationary frame(doesn't fold down.). We are looking for a new replacement colored top for this without any luck. Any advise would be helpful.

Ours seams have started getting some dry rot. And it has become to much to repair.

I own an 1979 Playcraft 24' Pontoon. Last year I had a boat dealer check my pontoons as we took on about a gallon of water over the summer in each pontoon. The dealer told me that the aluminum welds were leaking and repaied them with epoxy. They advised that I may only get another year or two of use from this boat. I recnetly was told by another 1976 Playcraft owener that the pontoons were filled with styrofoam. Does anyone know if this is true? If not, where can I get new potoons?
I love this boat and have done extensive restoration on it. I really don't want to get rid of it.

We bought a used Lowe pontoon boat (about 1990) this spring and are doing some fix-ups. The stitching has come apart in a couple of places on the vinyl top and I'd like to try to repair it if I can before investing in a replacement top. Any suggestions? Can it be sewn? Is there a glue or adhesive that would work better? Looks like everybody who knows anything about pontoon boats frequents this blog. Hope you can help!

I have a 1997 20 Smoker Craft which I have refurbished. The problem is that the pontoons them-self dont seem to produce enough flotation....ie: when people are forward, (not overloaded by the way) the nose occasionaly dips under the water. my question is, can I add a third pontoon in the center? I assume I can but how far does it need to extend back? Can it be only half the length of the boat or...? I dont want to disturb the "hydrodynamics" at the prop . I know many manufacturers are producing tri-toons but I am working on a Red-Neck budget. Anyone have any ideas?

I just got a 1990 something pontoon that came with the cottage we bought. I will be buying a carpet kit and a bimimi top from you soon. I thought the seats we OK but after uncovering the boat and cleaning today I found that a few of the seems on the seats have come unsown in places. The vynol is not ripped, Are these seems easily repairable, if so how and what do I use. Also what is the best chemical to remove stains from the vinyl, The cover ripped and they have tree dust and dirt residue on the seats.

I just recently acquired a '87 bas buggy with a 60hp mercury motor. At top end, per the speedometer i reach a speed of 15mph with two people on board. Is this normal or should it be faster? How can I tell if I have water in the logs? Great Forum.

Great sight, but not a lot of questions answered. I am hoping someone will help me here though.
Is is better to have a 3 log pontoon then 2 log? Does it help stablize it better in the water? Or is it just to allow more weight on the Pontoon?
Are U tubes/logs better then round welded tubes/logs?
We are looking into purchasing a pontoon, and there are so many variables I would really like to know from people who own or have owned, honest facts.
We are in AZ and most use will be on Lake Mohave or Lake Mead, does anyone know if the lakes here in the desert are harder on boats? I know our water is harder then anywhere I have been in my life and you have to have a water softern or have horrible spotting or milk glass crystal glasses after one or 2 washes.
Any help would be appreciated.

I just rebuilt a 22' pontoon boat with the only Words I can find on it is Safari.
All of the specs on the loading data plate have faded . The Hull ID number is DVN60388B686.
I would like to know the manufactor and year model of the boat.

Godfrey won't sell me their camper enclosure because the boat has a 220 Vovlo inboard motor and has the potential for fumes. All I'm am looking for is a covering with screen/plastic that could protect me and my guests in a rainstorm. I currently have a Bimini top over the back 1/3 of the boat but it is grossly inadequate for rain cover. I had my pontoon get udert the dock this past weekend when the lake was being lowered and when it came back up it crused the fensing on the front. Where can you buy new fencing etc?

Hello. My husband and I just bought a new 22 pontoon. Its a Godfrey Parti Kraft. We recently purchased a depth finder and are trying to find the best place to mount the transducer. We have heard that its not good to mount this behind the tubes due to the turbulence that the water causes when running the boat, which can cause the depth and fish finding capabilities to be incorrect.
Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations on where to best mount this? Thanks so much.

My 1958 34' long, 10' beam Kayot pontoon boat has finally fatal electrolysis. I put a new deck on 4 to 5 years ago along with a 10' by10' room. Hopefully at my age this will be the last major work I will do on this boat. What I would like to know is the general differences in aluminum, fiberglass and polyethylene pontoons. Any help will be appreciated.

Just ordered some seats from you guys and just have a few questions. First off, I am redoing a 1995 24' Monark. The toons had a few leaks which I have had presseded to find and have re-sealed them. The deck is in great shape so I am in the process of re-carpeting it. I have removed my 60hp Merc and replaced it with a 115hp 4-stroke.
My first question is that I am looking for the sun deck portion for the new furinture. It includes the flip top over the personal changing area and the portion just behind the corner seat which also filps up for extra storage. Are these avaiable or will I have to re-cover what I have? Second, my console is still in good shape, however the vinyl is white in color to where the new seats offered only a cafe color. How much trouble is this ging to be to re-cover myself and is it worth it? Finally, upon replacing my new motor I found that over the winter I had been invaded by a varmit that literally chewed my wiring harness in two. Any suggestions to prevent this other than running it back through metal conduit?

I just bought a 91 Lowe's Pontoon boat. The seats and carpet are in extkra bad shape as is the top. The frame work is in excellent shape. I would like to know if you can buy just the cushions for the seats without buying all of the frame work.
WE have a small lake and it is just for us to fish off of and I do not want tol pujt a lot of money into it.
Do you have a catalog or is there someplace on line that I can see these.

I just purchased a new 20' Harris FloteBote Super Sunliner. I am very happy with it. We run it on inland lakes in WI. The instrument panel contain Euro-White Faria guages. They are extremely cool looking - BUT the speedometer doesn't work and I am told by the marina's mechanics that it never will becasue our boat doens't go fast enough for the speedometer to work. WHAT? I have had a Rinker pontoon whose speedometer worked. Has anyone ever experienced such a problem? Do you know how to fix it??

I have heard that once a speedometer stops working - you should run your boat in reverse for 2 to 3 hours to unwind it. It could just be bound up. The other to check for is to make sure you are actually in gear and in motion. The speedometer won't register if you are in neutral. One final trick I have always used is to hitch a town with another boat and then ask them what there speedometer is registering. This is soem tricks I have learned....

Forget what that Horacio says - he's just being a smart ass.... Faria gauges are typicvally worhtless and that's your problem. They are made in China and how fast can you go in a rice paddy fields? I doubt they realize the speedometer isn't working during their field tests.

Jusy found this site. Sure is good to know I'm not the only one. Anyway I have two comments. One is that I just rebuilt a 28' Party Barge and I'm up gradeing the transom. As you all know most of these inserts are wood. Any ideas on what and how tro replace it. Note: I will be using a larger motor. The other comment is reguarding the question asked about using pontoons in the ocean. I put a third 24' toon under my boat and I use it only in Large coastal waters. It has survied 5' sea's with 40 mph winds. All comments appreciated.

I rebuilt a 1978 Martin-Ramrod 12 foot pontoon boat a year ago. That third pontoon idea really works. I added a third pontoon to our rebuilt boat plus I put on a 200 hp Yamaha 4 cycle with a SST Baretta 19 pitch, 4 blade prop and the boat is great. It goes 68 mph on calm waters and has withstood storms with winds up 13 mph gusts and their pounding waves with whitecaps on the lakes up to 12" high. In those conditions the boat only goes about 3 mph but we will make it back to port. It does use about eight gallons of gas every hour, but I installed twin 80 gallon gas tanks and resolved that problem.

It's very easy -- weld yourself a transom super structure out of 2" stainless inside the transom well. then using tuckpoint spot welds every 3", or 1/2" turbo-charged rivets every 6" - affix the 1/2" transom plating and don't forget it has tro be balanced evenly on all four sides. Then add a few neat features like a 1"' staniless tube ski pylon 3' over the transom's mid point and add a 6' x 24" aluminum telescopic ladder that ends up on a two person - 4' round, 1/2" treated decking/carpeted floor &3' aluminum 3' railings - conning tower area. It's always nice to go up abopve the boat see where you have been! I also shoot skeet from up there. It's a great place to get away from the crowd on the boat.

I just purchased a 22' Fisher pontoon boat. We took it out yesterday (2nd time out in it) and we love it.
This one has the Aluminum deck, I didn't go out of my way to have an aluminum deck, it was the one on the boat. Is aluminum good to have for the deck? Is wood better?
Anyway, I hope to have a good 10 years out of our new "barge," so far I really love it.

I own a SunTracker 21ft Fishing Barge. 26" tubes and aluminum floor. 90 hp 4 stroke Merc. The aluminum floor is the best thing anyone can put on these boats. Well worth the extra money. My pontoon runs 30mph and pulls skiers with no problems. I'm thinking about a third tube for better floatability and speed. Any info would be helpfull. I'm told the boat will run faster with a third tube. Live in N.central Fl. just outside of Gainesville. I have polished my tubes to a chrome finnish and gained 2mph. It looks slicker than a mirror. Alot of work but I get compliments where ever I go. 3M aluminum polish and a high speed buffer works the best. 2 mph isn't much but to us pontooners that is alot. The lake police freak out when I pass them by pulling a skier. Max hp,aluminum floor and over sizes tubes = the fastest toon on the lake. We are a different breed us tooners but we sure enjoy our boats. Ya'll have fun and stay safe.

I'll race ya ... I am on Pine Island near Cape Coral & Ft. Myers. I have a 1975 28 foot Bennigan I over-hauled and rebuilt from the ground up. It used all aluminum (including the flooring and transom mounting area) and I agree with you that makes the boat very light. When I got donen with it last year, after 7 years of qworking on it, it had 3 23" tubes, a full length Bimini top, a private head, a sink, a full rack of top of the line furniture, several storage compartments, a 40 gallon ghas tank, a captains seat/ instrument panel that would make ocean liner captains jealous. I even connected the tiller harness to a small joy stick like cruise liners have for steering rather than a large old fashioned steering wheel. It has a SONY AM/FM/Marine band stereo with a 6 disc CD changer along with a shortwave marine banmd two way radio system. It's powered by twin 150hp Yamaha 4 cycles (best on the market) with 5 blade, 21 pitch deep cupped props. I polished and then chrome plated the 23" tubes and that lowered water resistance and made the boat even faster. The boat has been clocked at going from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds on real calm water. It always can get to 60 within 5 seconds. With the top Bimini top completely put-away and only me on the boat I have reached 104 mph.
We ususally blow cigar boats out of the water until they reach maximum planing speed which is over 100 mphs and then I lose them. But for the first 1/2mile or so they are very nervous racing me... So we just added a 4th pontoon to it this past week and it added another 5 mph ............... it also imporved my gas consumption which as you can imagine is horrible at about 8 gallons per hour when were going all out on it. We have used it in the Cape Coral Ski Bandits water shows pulling 12 person inverted pyramids at 38-43mph to a standing ovation. It's an awesome boat or barge as you call it.

I would love to see your boat. Multi tubes must be the answer to speed. A friend of mine put a 200 hp on a built toon and when he reached about 45mph it started to chine walk so bad he had to slow down. My boat is bone stock with max hp rated for the boat. I haven't been out gunned yet by another toon that is stock. I would never call a boat a barge but SunTracker decided to call it a Fishing Barge. I do have one more trick to do. I will put a thin sheet of aluminum across the bottom of the floor rails under the boat. In rough water the flow coming off the tubes hits the cross members and I can feel it slowing the boat. I want to get a third tube but haven't had the time to follow up. Where is all your work being done? I would love to drop it off and have #3 put on. I agree Yamee's are great motors but I had to stick to Merc on account of cost. They wanted 1000 bucks more and the throttle set up was 700 more. The Merc runs great and my fuel bills dropped from my old 2 stroke 75. I've redone the ulpolstry and guages. The boat looks like new except for the decals. With a large family a third tube would be the ticket. I run the boat at Lake Sante Fe in Melrose near Gainesville and Lake Weir south of Ocala where my girlfriend lives. They are about 6000 acres each. Best of luck with your boat, it sounds like a screamer.

Pontoon Willy is a legend in his own mind. I know him well and he knows that I know my Mercury powered Airboat is ten times faster than that goofy looking 4 tuber pontonn boat of his. It's truly a floating barge and while it is fast, it ain't that fast. Plus it doesn't turn too well - but he didn't tell you that. His little itty bitty joy stick just doesn't cut it - he needs a steering wheel to command that boat's tiller system. Take a run up near Capt. Cons some evening and you'll find Willy running his boat in Port Charolotte Harbour - it'll be the boat with at least 6 lovel women on it .... Willy only likes one thing better than that boat of his -- WOMEN!

I say rubbish to that Gatorman guy. We have only raced twice - once on open water which I scorched him and then once down in the Glades and he could manuever those little creeks faster than me and he won. Yes it has troubles turning but my boat is the fastest thing on the water going straight. I beat two cigar boats yesterday Plus a Coast Guard Cutter. And his comments about the ladies - of course I like them. Bterr yet they like me, too! That really gets old Gatorman. That comment of his about being a legend in my own mind is rubbish. Every boater for a hundred miles around knows old Willy and the powerful boat I command. Yes, I am a legend -- in the minds o f many around here. Damon, yes i still have the 91 sun tracker, party cruiser and would sell it as my wife has dementia and wont get on the boat. The best top shop around here is buildint a top (cover ) for the aft deck and should have it on in two weeks from now, it will have windows and screens too. Lee DeArmond

Ok guys. Willy your ok in my book. Heck any pontoon is hard to turn. As far as the girls I hope you have a hundred on your boat at all times. Air boats? Lets compare apples to apples. My Chevy Surburban is faster than your air boat. Anyone can make an air boat go fast. But take a toon and make it go fast,, now that is a feat in it's self. Brag on Willy you have the right. The joy stick thing does scare me a bit. I need a steering wheel to hold on to. If I come down there I'll bring a boat load of girls as well. Stay between the bouys boys.

I haven't stopped laughing since I read those comments to that Pontoon Willy character by that Gator fella. MacDaddy is correct -- making a Pontoon go fast is a real challenge.
I have done that!! I habve a real AIR-BOAT....
I am on the Lake of the Ozarks near St. Louis. A real big Lake. I have built a flying barge - I named it -- The Aluminum Goose. It's a 26 foot 1990 Playbouy pontoon boat rebuilt from the pontoons up to to the decking. I gave the frame superior strength with new welds and removed some weight (it only weighs 980 lbs). I mounted a 1988 140HP Volkswagon 4 cylinder engine to the boats bow. It has a 6 foot diameter propellor.
I lightened the transom area and put on a 50 hp Honda 4 cycle. I changed the aerodynamics of the boat -- smoothed the sheeting and lowered thye gunwhale . I welded on a set of 16 foot aero-dynamic bi plane wings I got from an old 1932 scrapped crop duster plane. I reduced the pontoons to 10 inches in diameter for speed and added 12" bicycle tires to their bottoms for land landings.
I can reach speeds of up to 92 mph on the water (and wings folded up). Att 78 mph (and wings locked down) I am able to lift the boat off the water and fly at an altitude of about 2200 feet. That's the highest we have gone up to.
Everyone on the Lake knows old Samuel. I am 81 years young with a doctorate in Aeronautic Engineering and Aerospace Technology. I am retired from the military for many years and have always found doing unique things like this to be fun. You should see the looks when we fly over other boats at an air speed of about 90 knots. For added excitement I do two thinmgs - first when storms come up - we'll fly above them over the Lake until they pass. For getting even with boaters who don't follow go safety rules I'll dump our holding tank storage excrement on them from a our marine head. They know who I am and they get the point.
The beauty of our Air-Boat is I can store it at our home in Misoul 30 miles from the Lake - I take off in our street - fly it to the Lake - land in the Lake 20 minutes later - and boat all day. When we are ready to go home - we take off - 20 minutes later we land at our home and we're done for the day. It's great!!
By the way - I live with three shipmates - all gals and I'm going strong. Willy has nothing on this old buoy!

I will be in the St. L area next week and would like to know how to get to the Lake of the Ozarks to sere that machine. If it is true I will buy it for any amount you are asking for it.... Harry - it is for real. We have been spot-lighted many times on national TV news networks. We have a 2 hr documentary on it on the FX channel. Last year we had 12 parachutists with skis on jump off the plane at 1800 ft. then land on the Lake in an inverted pyramid position - no one has ever done that. It was a first. I am not intersted in selling my AirBoat but I will asell you the plans so you can build your own.
I'd like to get $500,000 for them.
Here's how to get to our Lake -- From St Louis take I-70 W. about 180 miles to MO-5 / ASHLEY RD. exit - EXIT 101- go toward BOONVILLE / TIPTON, then turn LEFT onto I-70 BL / US-40 / MO-5 / W ASHLEY RD. and go to US-50. Turn right. Go to MO-135. you are at our end of the lake at Lake Of The Ozarks ... Look for the Red and White boat docked with White bi-plane wings - that is us.

I have purchased the blue prints to the Pontoon AIR-BOAT plans. After riding in Sammy's AIR-BOAT I had to have one ASAP. My mechanixcs started building it today.
Sammy thanks for the great day on the lake and in the sky.
I have a lot and have done a lot -- but never have I had so much fun. Your a real special guy. From that free fall (I thought we were gonners), nose dive, multiple 360 rolls straight down towards the lake from 2500 feet to the ultimate pull out, at 150 feet, and then landing that babay as smooth as a duck on a pond - I was scared, you know what!
And rippping along on the lake at speeds in excess of 60 mph. What a thrill --
I especially liked tubing. The tube planed up to 4 feet off the lake's surface -- that is breathtaking. I wonder how mahy Gs I was pulling? And when you took off going over the ski jump and launched the pontoon boat into the sky and it became an airplane again -- what a machine. If I had my druthers I would not have been tubing behiond the boat when that happened, but all ended up safely, so I must say it was an experience up there dangling in a tube.
And dropping those 'poop bombs' as you call them on the Jet Skiers was a blast!
I can't wait until my AIR BOAT is ready. My people tell me 8 weeks and we'll be up in the air....

I want to refinish the side panels on my pontoon. The one I have now seems to be sheet metal, riveted inside the aluminum fence. I thought that if I riveted it on the outside of the fence rather than inside, it would hide the fence and make it look better.
Does anybody know what kind of material is appropriate for the paneling? Should I use sheet metal, aluminum, fiberglass...? Thanks.

I bought a 16' pontoon recently. Although it is in very good shape, there's something that bothers me. It doesn't seem to lay flat on the water, as if the rear end was much heavier than the front. If three people seat on the back seat, it gets so heavy that the motor goes into the water and the front lifts up. I thought that maybe the pontoons had water in, but I checked them out, and they are as dry as they could be. Does anybody have any ideas? Is it fisible to add a third small pontoon in the middle, on the rear end, just in front of the motor? Thank you for helping.

Sorry to inform you, all boats have a weight distribution problem due to a hundred plus pound motor & helmsman steering center beign affixed to their rear end. You do have a few options:
1. keep the weight on the boat balanced by moving your passengers to the middle or fron of the boat =- tghis is the cheapest option
2. relocate your helmsman steering & heavie seating to the front -- put lighter seating to the rear - this isn't cheap but it works well
3. downsize to dual engines and locate each one in the middle on eaxch side -- you go faster and the boat remains very level
4. replace the rear based motor with a sail - you'll find it's much quieter on board and really a smooth sailing machine - this is what I have done - I lowered my engine to a 15HP outboard and I use my 20' sails for popwer aroubnd the gulf. It's great.

I visited and spent the day with him last Sat. I rode and flew in his AIR-BOAT. It's a fraud.
I actually paid $350,000 for his secret plans so I could build one of my own. We started on Monday - today my engineers say they have discovered that Sammy actually converted a bi-plane into a pontoon Boat thast still flies.
The crook!! I thought the boat felt a tad smaller. He really conned me ... I will be seeing that pirate in the courts.
We have cactually mounted wings on my pontoon boat but it won't lift off the water - goes over 90 mph. So our new plan is to convert it into a hot air balloon / pontoon boat.
I'll let you all know how it comes out ...

I agree with David -- that Samuel is an outright kook. Everyone knows you can't convert a pontoon boat to a airplane. That was crap!
Now I have seen hot air balloons here in Florida connected to pontoon boats - so that seems real enough to me. So I do believe Harry is doing somehting more practical.
I bet noone has ever doen what I have done wirh one of my pontoon boats -- I made it be part boat / part car - much like an amphibious duck. It was cool but cost too much time and money keeping it working so I got rid of a few years ago.

I inherited a 83 party barge with totally rotted plywood deck and seats. The aluminum toons and frame are sound. After much deliberation on whether to restore it or trash it I decided to do the rebuild. I am turning it into a fishing boat and didn't want carpet, carpet soaks up dirt, fish slime and bait stink and holds water promoting mildew and mold. After some research I decided to redeck it in aluminum. I ordered aluminum decking from ariddeck.com. Some minor mods to the cross beams were easily done with a cutting wheel, then the deck went on. It turned out wonderful, the new deck is light, strong, solid and seamless. It cost $1200 for 20' X 8' including hardware and shipping. It costs about twice as much as plywood/carpet but is lighter and much stronger and should last forever.
I'll buy seats for it when I can afford them and hope to find some with no wood in them. Wood always eventually rots when exposed to water.

hello, we own a 1989 suntcruiser. the transom is warping very much as if the torque of the motor will rip the motor off. are there any replacement transoms available? the top of the laminated wood is about 1 inch back and the bottom is 1 or more inches forward. it has the original 90 evenrude. thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I too have a 1991 party cruiser and I had to have the entire cover w/frames fabricated from square tube alum. and sunbrella cover. The cost came to 1,387.00. The surprise was that the front deck cover was only about 1/2 that of the dog house over the aft area. This is no help as to a source for frames butI just wanted to let you know the going price in Va. Beach, VA of covering the entire aft area with zippers, windows and screens. Lee

I need help with any information on repairing pontoons. I have removed one of the pontoons from the boat and started using a wire wheel to remove the oxidation. I am getting down to an aluminum shine. Is there any product that will fill the holes, pitts, and be flexable enough to stay on?

You are taking on an admirable task. Pontoons are such a nuiscance to maintain. The minerals in the waters, the impact nature has upon them, or even just the normal wear and tear that is to be expcted of any man-made product that sit outside in the weather elements causes such impact on pontoons.
Polishing them with metal wax will work wonders. Buff twice - polish once. But buff 8 times and polish 6 times creates a reamrkable finish.
If repairs are still needed after polishing to correct pitting, scratches, dents, or more you might try the Mr. Gormans Pontoon Patching Kit - just a small amount of patch repair is needed,
When you are all done, next spring year buff the pontoons to a high gloss and then spin your boat around in a cirlce 3 times in the lake and screem like a chicken...

I am in the process of getting together a list to renovate the furniture on my 1986 20' Bass Buggy. The only issue I am concerned about is the cureved rear corners. Since I will not be replacing any of the railing, I want a cliean tight fit at the corners. Are the corner seats available on the market available with a radius corner that will fit this model? Currently there is a curved arm rest on each side with 2 bench seats between. I was wanting to replace with an L-shaped bench/radiused corner seat/bench layout. Any info/help would be appreciated.

Hello I am in the market for a top of the line 30 ft + pontoon houseboat that is trailerable. I have only found a few makers, the style I desire is similar to the Suntracker 34ft with the cabin, to includes full canvas and i/o. I dont think there is such beast out there.
Should you want one that requires some substantial work done, I have a 1991 Suntracker "Party Cruiser" 32 feet X8'3" with the house on it, new roof over the 8 X 10 house ($1,300.00) and new canvas over the rear sleeping area (done last mo. $1,389.00)
onan Generator 4KW,outboard, Johnson 115 hp. Roof A/C & Heat, fridg 12/115 volt, shore power, water system, Etc. Etc.
There are no leaks around the side windows now but they will have to be reframed in the near future and the front deck would look real nice with new carpet (the carpet now is useable for some time, but but to be up to what I think are your standards a replacement would be required)
There is no trailer.
Price: as is and on my lift is $5,000.00

I AM REDECKING A 24 FOOT BASS BUGGY. I'M CONSIDERING USEING SOME TIMBERTECH DECKING PRODUCTS. was looking at the comments on painting aluminum. I bought a houseboat with aluminum pontoons in marinas becareful of electrolysis which will eat an aluminum pontoon in no time at all
if you decide to paint first wetsand blast the pontoons then coat with zinc chromate then paint with a barrier paint then an anti fouling paint the barrier paint acts to prevent the anti fouling paint from eating your pontoons. The antifouling paint is copper based and eats aluminum
this coming fall i am going to put new pontoons under it the will be made of polyethelene with closed cell foam inside
the walls are 3/8 in thick

I have a 32' tracker "party cruiser" the one with the 8 X 12' house on it.
Question: has anyone tried putting an electric or small o/b of about 6 HP on the bow to control it in wind & docking ? Sort-of a bow thruster arangement. If so please let me know some of the pitfalls involved. My grandson could operate it while I control the stern. At 84 I need all the help available.
I live on salt/tidal water, a fast flow on an outgoing tide requires some fancy maneuvers to get into my tight lift, having just bought my neighbor a new swim platform for $785.00 I am looking for a better way to dock. The 115 Johnson is plenty of power but the current catches the bow and" everyone becomes a passenger"

I will be buying a 20-24 foot pontoon boat in the next few weeks. I will use it for fishing and cruising the intercoastal waters of Florida and occasionally in the Gulf of Mexico or within a mile offshore. I have looked at the underside of the decks and noticed the exposed wood deck. I will be trailering the boat when not using it, but what options should I be looking for to prevent water damage and rust? Should I use aluminum deck (dura-deck)? Are there other things I can do myself to protect against salt water?
Any suggestions would be welcomed by a rookie "tooner"

I just bought a lake lot in a cold weather climate. The property came with a 1972, 16 ft. pontoon boat. The previous owner lft the boat in the water and it is now frozen in. Will the ice hurt the pontoons?
Also - does anyone have a trick way to get the boat on land without the use of a trailer or expensive lift?
A friend of mine suggested wenching it out onto logs that can roll up the beach. How will the pontoons hold up to that stress?

Hi Just found your site, a little late as I just ordered marine grade plywood 3/4 inch and marine grade 18 oz carpet to redeck our 21 foot pontoon boat. Now the big question, do you have instruction manuals how to tear down the existing and rebuild, can I buy just the bolts, new furntiure, etc from you. My husband and I have just purchased a new pontoon boat. We are having a real difficult time loading the boat onto the trailer. We can't seem to line it up correctly. Either the front or the rear gets out of shape before we are completely on. HELP!

Penny,
I have a 24 ft Sweetwater. Had lots of problems lining up and loading until I went to a shallower ramp. You might have to back into the water more and then pull up a little at a time while straightening rear of boat. Not an eash task, especially with longer boats on steep ramps.
Also, I rigged my boat with bass-seats on the front, installed a large live-well in the front center area fed with a bilge pump and added a water areator. I have two fish finders. One transducer is mounted on the foot of my trolling motor (Motor Gide makes one special for front of pontoon boat). The other transducer is mounted on a bracket that I had welded ont the rear of one of the pontoons. I would suggest having a bracket welded to both.
Overall, this has be the best fishing platform I've ever owned. And that's saying a lot because I've had all kinds.

Great site, and I to have a water problem. I took my old poontoon boat and made a floating dock out of it, went to turn it around last week and one of the toons sank, what is the best kind of pump to use and how to install, also how do i find the holes. the boat was used in salt water and then moved to a fresh water canal when made into a floating dock. I have redecked my 24 pontoon. I have repowered and re-transomed. I have a bimi top but it looks sad the previous owner must have hit a bridge or something and the reweld wasn't quite quality work. Actually it looks like a pretzel. I was wondering where I could find a hardtop. I have seen them around but i don't know where to get them. Also I did not see any side rail stuff on your website. I did get most of my redecking stuff from here and it worked out fine.

How do you tell if you have water in the tubes. I have a 24 ft Lowe, and it sits very low in the water. On the very back of the toons there is a 1/2 inch allen key on the bottom of the tube. Is this a drain area or is it there for something else?

I have a 92 Kayot 24' pontoon boat, that was my fathers. It has a 40hp outboard motor on it. I would like to put a larger outboard on it. I belive 120hp is the largest it can handle. I was thinking about a 90hp would do a good job. Ilooking for feedback on this. I also looking at reduing the seats with" pontoonstuff". If I do, then I would change the color of the boat. What is a good paint to use on this type of alumminum? I would like any comments you may have

Please help I have purchased a pontoon/houseboat and would like to put pontton seats on front deck, I want the new style pontoon corner seats where they look built in. I have looked everywhere and can not come up with anything. all replacement seats are three piece and you buy arms seperate but if you look at new ones on the market all of the seat is built together with a sleek linecurve look. can anyone help me find the new style seats somebody has to make these and sell tehem seperately.
