Proud to be the second tooner from Minnesota on these forums. Also kinda disappointed. There has to be a hundred pontoons on the lake my cabin is
on and probably more on the lake I live on. Its very surprising that there are
not more people from MN on this site.

Rick:
After having the Avalon / Merc combo for a season, I'm loving it!
This has been my first and only pontoon thus far, so I'm not really able to compare it to any other brands. The fences seem to be a bit thin - a couple of dents were suffered on two corners, but they hammered out easily enough with a rubber mallet and a wood block I cut to match the radius of the bends. The furniture and mechanicals have held up as new, so far.
I managed to absolutely shred a prop late in the season (still not sure of what I backed into), but I made it back home with no troubles and have been amazed at how the local prop shop was able to renew it. The Merc is a 4 stroke EFI, and it has been flawless and is very easy on the fuel. The boat handles as well as can be expected, and it will get out of its own way if necessary.
I added a depth finder and toilet at the start of the season, and between being able to comfortably cruise around for a few miles and then park on a sandbar and be social, my wife and I have found the ultimate way to balance out the North Dakota winters.
I'm planning a thorough cleaning and waxing soon, and aside from adding a couple of extra speakers, I think we're pretty much ready to go as soon as the ice thaws. I'll try to get a few photos loaded up soon.
-Russ

Howdy all
I am located North of Houston Texas in the Woodlands / Conroe area. My friend and I stated restoring an old pontoon boat he had sitting out in the pasture for a while. We currently have it stripped down to the metal, and have started rebuilding it. I finished building the furniture and am about to start the upholstery. We want to make if strictly a fishing boat.
My other project is a 1999 Fisher 241 DXL 24 ft. boat that I bought last month so I can take my grandson fishing, tubing, etc. I have all the decals taken off, the upholstery redone, so it will be ready to go this coming Spring.
The fishing pontoon will be out big project and I hope to have some photos to download soon.
This is a great forum and I have learned a great deal about doing the work on the boat etc.
Thanks to all for your input, and I also appreciate the encouragement!!
Jim K.

Hi Terry and Arlene. Do you all have any pics that you can share? Sounds like you got a good setup already. Are you guys doing the upholstery yourselves?

We're from North Central Texas--just south of Ft. Worth. We do most of our fishing and camping on Lake Whitney and the Brazos River north of the Whitney Dam.

Gun Barrel City, Texas,,,,, Cedar Creek Lake.
Pontoon boats are very popular here.
Cedar Creek Lake has 7200 private boat docks, according to the County Assessor's office.

nice to meet all of you. I'm not certain what type of pontoon I'm going to buy yet. Something in the 22-24 foot range, not sure what horsepower to put on the back yet. I think I want one with three pontoons, any thoughts? I might like to eventually do some tubing or skiing with it( I have a three year old and a four year old), but mostly cruising and fishing.

If you're thinking about a triple log toon, then I would go with at least a 115 HP or even better, a 150 if you can swing it. The main reasons for going with a 3rd log are better stability/ride in rough water, more load capacity (people) and the ability to use a larger HP engine. Although your children are young now, if you intend to keep the toon for any length of time, you will all appreciate the extra power down the road. If you are boating in somewhat calm waters, don't plan on having but 4 or 5 extra folks onboard and just plan on cruising around or fishing, then a 2 log with a 90 HP or so will definitely get the job done. I have a 20' 2 log with a 90HP and it pulls a tube just fine and moves along pretty well with 4 or 5 people onboard. Most of the time it's just the two of us of us and it's been great so far. All just depends on what you plan on doing and how deep your pockets are..

Another new face to add to your site. I've been living in FL (Cocoa Beach) on a canal front home for a while now and we recently decided to look into a pontoon boat. We've got a pretty big extended family and think it would be a great way to get everyone together. We haven't yet bought a boat, but hope to soon. I've only had experience with your standard recreational boats, no pontoons. We're probably looking for about a 24 footer and need lots of shade. (In-law is a dermatologist..) Mostly cruising, but we've all got kids, so I think versatility is a plus.
I'm an engineer (electrical) and I like to know how stuff works, so be prepared for a lot of questions. I don't yet rival my 3 yr old, but I'm close.
I've been scanning the classifieds locally and have a few boats I'm considering so I'd like to ask some questions, but wanted to introduce myself first and say Hi. Also not sure where best to post such general questions...
I've been reading through some of the forum for a while and like the looks of it. I just kind of found the site while browsing the net. I'm a member of a couple car-forums, so the layout looks familiar and it seemed easy to navigate. I've also seen a lot of stuff on PS that I'm sure will make it to my new boat (whatever it is)... Lots of great stuff!
