This thing is a floating advertisment for Pontoon Stuff! About all you see is from them. They have been very nice to deal with. We had some shipper related problems and some damaged stuff but these folks (Annette) sp? have worked hard to make sure I got what I needed and make it right. Kudos to the crew at Pontoon stuff. I will try to keep up with this thread as I get further along and have more pics available. Thanks for all the help guys!!
Here's what I started with back in march;

Thanks CaptainRon! My biggest polishing tip, DON'T DO IT! LOL. It is a fair amount of work. I should have started with a month in the gym. My arms and shoulders hurt! But, that said, it wasn't all that bad. CLean 'em up good first with the acid(a/c coil cleaner) and then I sanded it lightly with 320 grit on a palm sander, use a good quality polish (I used Nuvite) and get plenty of cold beer. It took several evenings and a LOT of cold ones but I think it was worth it when I look at it.

Robbie,
If you don't mind me asking..... how much do you think that you have invested? I live in the same general area as you and I have been considering buying and redoing an old toon. I just haven't found one that I am brave enough to tackle yet.
Thanks,
Geeco

I don't know for sure where I am right now but when all is said and one I suspect we will be somewhere around $9-10k BUT, thats EVERYTHING new except the logs and the outboard but includes the tune-up and waterpump replacement. I have replaced every nut bolt and screw on this thing with SS too. The carpet is the better stuff, the seats are the premium ones, the bimini is the bigger deluxe one, 2 new 19 gal fuel tanks and plumbing, all new lighting, wiring etc. The console is all Azek custom built as a control console and bar area which has cost quite a bit more than a standard console. I also bought new used railing for it. the old stuff just wasn't what we wanted at all. I'm sure I could have done it for a lot less but we plan on keeping it for years to come so we've gone all out. As a point of reference, about $5k of the expense was from PontoonStuff.com so you can see, fewer, cheaper seats and fewer 'goodies' = less bucks. I thinks that is still a fair price for a 'new' 28' toon. ( and hopefully it floats, we haven't had it in the water yet! )

Ok, time for some more pics. After the buff we had to mount the new motor pod and splash sheilds on the stern. I strengthed the cross members by bolting a 2 inch, 1/4 thick aluminum angle to them all the way across and ran the same under each side of the pod. This resulted in a much stronger, more solid transom.

Next step wa putting on the deck. Used CCA treat ply. This boat actually has an H channel that the wood slides into so each piece had to be cut down about 1/8 inch 3/4 in down each side. I used a router and it went really quickly and easily but, 'sliding them in' was a little more than expected. We had to use a come along to persuade them in. Once it was all in place we used the same to squeeze it all tight and square and then thru bolted it on. ( again all SS fasteners.) Then we glued and rolled carpet.

Following along we installed the railing; It was 'new' used that we had customized for our boat. We have a bass boat for fishing so this is just for cruising and wanted a full fence to maximize the deck space.

finishing touches;

Thanks to all for the kind words. My67falcon, glad I could help! Ok so how 'bout an update. After the rails were on I had to make a rear deck for the horseshoes to sit on and house the fuel tanks. As there was no deck there prior I had to get alum C channel and cut and mount it. I used 2 inch to match the rest. I also decided to insulate the rear fencing to help keep motor noise down. I put inch styrofoam into the recess and then covered it with a thin aluminum sheet. I don't know if it will help but it can't hurt, I hope. I wrapped the edges with tape to keep it from squeaking. Sorry about the fuzzy pics, my camera seems to be going south.

Well here is an update. We got all the furniture installed and put on the running lights and the docking lights. We bought a set of $19.95 55w driving lights from Walmart and I made some plastic(Azek) bezels to mount them in and put them in the fence. I thought it worked out pretty good.

Here's a general question..... I see alot of pontoons that don't take advantage of the full length of the toons. The last picture above is an example of this. There appears to be about 1 foot of extra toon sticking out in the front. Is there a reason for this? It would seem useful to have the deck go all the way to the tip of the toon. I'm not questioning Robbie's design, I just wondered if there was a general reason since I have seen this on several pontoons.

If I may answer the above question.
Different manufactures biuld there toons in different ways, the older toons show a lot more pontoon than the newer ones.
now for my question, since i can not find anywhere to buy the nav.lites i want how can i get you scbadiver to build me or tell me how to get a set of plastic(Azek) bezels to mount my lights with, they look great.
your whole project looks real good, i know that you are very proud of the finished look.

Thanks Cuzzx! Azek is available through some hardware stores and lumber supply stores. It is primarily designed to be used for house trim, like facia boards and around windows and such. It is a PVC stock and can be cut, routed, and machined like any soft wood with the same tools. It can also be glued, just like PVC pipe or screwed together. It's available in standard trim sizes, 1x4, 1x6 etc but also in 4x8 and 4x10 sheets. I'm currently building out entire console out of the sheet stock. It is about 8' long and 28 inches wide and will have the steering and gauges and and a bar with a built-in ice bucket and cabinets below. I post some pics when its done. I love to make it for you but, I have about a thousand things left to do on this boat and then about a thousand other projects I've committed to when I get this outta the driveway. If you're still lookin' after christmas I may be caught up enough. I ALWAYS have too many projects for too many people on my plate! Let me know if you need any help if you want to make your own. I'll offer any guidance I can. Thanks again.

Hey Boatgirl, welcome aboard! I can't tell you much about this boat at all. Heck I don't even know if it really floats LOL! I just got it and started building it. I boated the Mississippi, mostly Alton pool for years and years though. I lived up there on a 28' cruiser for 2 years. I recommend and big of a boat and motor and money permits. The river can be pretty rough on a weekend during the day but sunset cruises are wonderful and the sand bars are nice. I'd also recommend you have somebody familiar with the area go with you a few times to show you around. there are dikes and shallows and other hazards that are easy to miss if you don't what you're looking for. Oh yeah, most important, BIG COOLER AND COLD BEER!

Absolutely awesome project and I thought I was doing good on mine , I've got a long ways to go but I've had mine out one the lake once already. Just have to get the gears adjusted properly before the next trip. I've added red led's around the bottom edge of the seats so we can do some night trips (and see what we're stepping on to keep from tripping). I think I'll only have about 3 grand invested besides the 2500 I bought it for. Had heart surgery recently (number 8), so got delayed again and its been so so HOT recently (well - very humid anyways).
I would have loved to have taken some before photo's of mine, but at least it was a whole sight better looking than yours when I brought it home but damn, you've done a bang up job there. Thanks for sharing.

your boat looks great.
i bought one and have about 8k in it but most was for a new 90hp 4stroke merc. i didnt buy seats we use folding camping chairs( my boat is mostly for fishing i was afraid that i would worry about the new seats). i did put on a new top that was 500.00 but it covers all of my pontoon. yours looks great!!

Scbadiver,
Have you decided what size motor to put on that pontoon boat? A 150 hp should move that thing pretty fast.

Thanks for all the nice words guys! Dave, NEVER a smaller toon, definately a longer driveway!!! Floridatoon, you're right a 150 would be sweet but, well, I blew my budget already so we are going to stick with the old 70hp Johnson that came with it . I did have it tuned up and the water pump replaced and the mechanic said it was still running well and strong so hopefully we can get a few season out of it. The bright side is with a 70hp, I don't think I'll have to worry about my beer getting spilled during those high speed manuevers! . I'm going to try to put some more pics up later today. I made a little progress in the last couple of weeks anyway. Hope y'all have a great weekend too!!

Ok, I've been working on the console the last few weeks. I wanted something very usable so we made it big and included a few extras so to speak. We'll have storage underneath behind the bigger doors and the cooler slides in and out of the way thru the little door under the lockable glove box we got from here at pontoonstuff. I still have to make the smaller cluster that will sit right over the steering console with the gauges in it. I also built a smaller ice bucket into the top for mixed drinks. It is all azek too but I wrapped the box with 1 1/2 inch styrofoam to keep the ice longer. It also has a drain tube so it won't fill with water. THis is where I am with it so far. It's not done yet but soon I hope!!
