Let us know what you think would be a good idea for the forums?

Just post your comments, suggestions, even criticism (constructive please ) right into this thread.

We'll see if we can implement your ideas and get the credit for it (attaboy, attagirl - not cash credit ) for it.

Come on folks, don't be bashful, we really do want feedback. An amendment to the posting rules is taking shape, setting a deadline for the initial instructions April 1st (yes I know its fools day, but can't help that) , nature of the beast I suppose.

I suspect though the rules will be modified/amended/added during the course of the next couple or so months before we finalize it. We want to keep it as simple as it can be and cover the bases. I also suspect I might hear more from you folks once you see the initial set on the 1st.

If you don't feel comfortable posting feedback here, then by all means send a pm to either an admin or moderator.

Thanks.

Larry Ray here is a easy soulution for that.  Use the active topics button on the top of the page at the left.  You can go strait to the topics that have been active since your last visit or whatever.  I use it all the time and it is a nice feature.

That's what I use as well. The color scheme is configured for some forum software packages, this one is I think really old. I've asked Jim to contact the programmer who configured and installed it intially to see if there is a newer update available. But we still have a lot of maintenance to do yet before we get there. April and May you may not notice any changes unless you scrutinize the Stats page. But waiting until I get the results of the newsletter and new member letter sent out April 1st and April 15th. By May 1st I'll be pretty busy cleaning up.

Well, I'm new to this forum, but I will make one suggestion.

I'm a member of the Cessna 150-152 Club and we have 'Daily Jokes' section on our forum.

Hate to say this - don't tell my boss, but I usually check the 'Daily Jokes' section every morning just to see what been posted.

Our members are responsible enough not to post anything bad; I've never seen anything objectionable, but there sure is a lot of funny posts.

Just an idea

Regards

I am a member of iboats and they have a section called stupid human tricks while boating\fishing. I frequent that one as well. Its a good place to post smomething stupid that you have done or seen someone do so that everyone can learn from eachothers mistakes.

Sometimes when I have not been here for awhile. Maybe boating for the weekend. Anyway when I come in I'll check and see whats been hapening here. If the posts have been busy I'll be somehow distracted before I gat a chance to review the active topics. Or a least all of them. Sure I could forum jump to find them but that is a p. i. a.  I've wondered weather it could be set up simular to iboats on this aspect. I can log out and come back and pick up where I left off. I find this handy when I can't  spend the time at the moment to read all the posts.

Maybe I was not clear enough. Lets say I'm reading the forums in back of house. Wife hallers thats dinner is ready. Never late for dinner are you? Anyway sometime after dinner I log back on. After I hit the active  topics it may say no active topics since say the previous 45 mnts. since I went to dinner. Then if wou want to review anything you didn't have a chance to read you have to forum jump to find it. Does this make since or am I doing something wrong?

Of course now you need to look at the date/time stamp of your active topics when you first log on - so if you get torn away, you're not looking at how long you were gone from the topics intially but you want to adjust to how far back you want to review. Say I'm gone from the forums since right after midnight. I log back on at 5pm, it'll show how many topics have been posted since my last log on. Actually I never log off, just might change computers (so that counts as a log off since I have to logon from the new computer), but it'll show when I last logged on, so I want to keep track of that time, so if I don't get done reviewing (which sometimes happens if I have to readjust someone's photos), then I just review back those 12-14 hours, and when I'm done, select the current time stamp.

Spamming configuration has been updated, this should help some of you guys who are real active without having to wait the necessary time between posts and avoid getting the spam message warning.

Charles / Mike, how about a tech section where we can find things like proven process for cleaning toons, etc. I was reading the thread about the crust and need to go looking for the other methods that have been tried. Just a thought. I know you guys are busy too.

Let me look as I thought we had something like that, or I was thinking of putting something together like that.  I personally haven't done the AC coil cleaner, but I do have an area on the inside of my toons that I can definitely use it on. But you're right about that. It's been talked about several times, and it needs to be a sticky topic probably in the rebuild section. After all, scbadiver and others have shown that mirror finish and scbadvier said his toons still look like mine on the bottom half, lots of pitting. Frankly, I've tried Gords, sanding, ToonBrite and now Nuvite and Nuvite wins hands down. For those of us that have OLD toons (more than 6 years old) that have that very hard crust which comes from sitting in water a long time, then at some point moved to a trailer which allowed that scum to harden, its a real pain to deal with. Yes sir, I'll get to it sometime this week and put some posts together, or just write up a new topic on what I think the best techique is, and let others post there what works for them. And of course, we want DETAILS don't we

Have you considered a roll off topic? What I mean is I know you are reluctant to take up forum space for photos for instance. Is it possible to develop a topic section that the posts roll off after a period of time? It could be a place to share things with each other that are maybe other than nuts and bolts. Could be you catch, scenery, etc. off topic things. And anyone posting there would realize its going away at some point. Could over time increase traffic to this site. What do you think Wildcat?  Just a thought on my part.

How about adding a button to jump to the first unread post in a thread?  This keeps you from having to go through all the posts you have already read to get to the new post.

Bamby, posts are closed after 6 months of no posts, after 2 years then they are deleted (if they are just normal topics). That way members can search the archives. Only posts that are actually deleted manually on a regular basis is those in the For Sale or Trade, and Want to Buy section.  We don't mind (and Jim/Andrea doesn't seem to mind paying for the storage) the photo's. I think when you said catch, you meant cache right? We have some other ideas in the offering (contest coming up soon). With the current forum software, I don't have much leeway in how it works. Could you be a little more specific about nuts and bolts? (my brain didn't kick in gear, stuck in neutral)

looneytune, other than the Active Topics button, this forum software is very old and hasn't been updated since it was put into operation in 2005, so you have to click on the last page and scroll down. But I've been on other forums and personally don't care to just read only new posts (then I miss out on the flow of the topic to get the full meaning). But I know what you're talking about. I haven't looked at all the new features yet of the updated software to see if that was configurable (its not in this version). I usually just click on the last page of the Active Topics of the topic I want to catch up on. Does that help? It does prevent you from having to read through say 3-4 pages of the original topic. Just keep in mind there will be times where you might have to change the Active Topics time frame from the current time to say 2, 4, yesterday, etc to catch topics that you missed that were updated previously (and the time refreshed on you).

Also keep in mind folks, we the forum admins and moderators have absolutely no control on how the buttons look or add buttons. I can however change some buttons as to what appears or not in the forum configuration and permissions (I've removed the upload file button since it was basically useless and it confuses those trying to upload pics, since that's a separate button).

Thanks for the response Charles. I try to always look before I ask (or leap) and didn't find it. But we all appreciate what you guys have given us in these forums. I have a good friend who runs one of the dragboat forums and I know how much time it takes.

Thanks Jason, and likewise, we all appreciate you guys being here and chiming in whenever you want, regardless if you found the answer or not. Sometimes just seeing a different prespective is very helpful. After all, it was the reason I came and planted my roots here last year. It probably took me 3 months before I signed up after checking out different forums. Oh I was as green as a field onion and nervous tackling some of the projects on the boat, but after watching scbadivers transformation of his old boat, it was like, yes - I can do that - well except for that custom console he built

Is it possible to add a button to jump to the newest post in a thread?  For example: if a thread has 18 posts, and I have read 17 of them, when I click on the thread, I have to scroll past all 17 to get to the one I have not read.

Other boards have an icon that will let you advance to the first unread post.  That saves a lot of time.

Thanks, Bob
