Now guys and gals, don't debate the finer points and get into arguments please. I was going to list HP models, but decided that wouldn't be so great. But you can in your replies which HP model would suit you best.

Thanks

Ok, I cast mine for a Yamaha for a 90hp (max rated my boat will accept), my 2nd choice is an E-Tec 90, but by the time I buy, I could have changed my mind by then.

Hey WD, I voted the evinrude.

I have looked at many motors in the last 6 months and I keep going back to the EVIN-ETEC.

Don't ask why, I just like what I see and read about it.

It might be because my old motor was/is an evinrude 75. I had this motor many years with no major or minor problems, I guess if you keep it mantained yearly it will go on forever.

On my jon boat, its a 9.5 evinrude a 1968 year, runs like a top, good and strong. So far after buying it from a coworker 2 months ago, I replaced the rope and that's it - he had to have the hub and prop fix (prop spinning on the hub) last year. I'm gonna paint it later as I'm working on the pontoon console now - remember those pics I posted when I bought the upper piece with gauges last year. Should have it ready in another couple of weeks. Gotta get some padding before I wrap it in new vinyl covering. It's like the energizer bunny, it just keep going and going and going.

I voted for the Yami because I find it easy to fix by myself so it saves me money no going to a mechanic.

I didn't vote but I was dead set on a 4 stroke when I bought my boat.  After reading about the dependability and fuel economy of the new 2 strokes, I don't really have a perference.

I think they all are pretty, especially if its new and hanging off the end of my boat (instead of my dull looking Mercury/Force 40) , but so far it putters me around

My personal choice is a four stroke.  I currently have a 2008 Mercury 60 four stroke, before that I had a 2005 Yamaha 90 four stroke.  I just prefer the cleaner burning four strokes as I eat the fish I catch.  I'll do anything I can do to help keep the water clean.  I'm not stuck on four strokes as I'm convinced that all the new motors are awesome.

What did you do with that yammie 90? That's exactly what I wanted.

I sold the boat the 90 Yammy was on.

Trextoon:  I loved the Yamaha 90 hp four stroke I had.  The only thing bad I can say about it is that I couldn't hear it running at idle.  Many times I would be fishing and wonder why I heard running water.  It was the pee stream, I had left the motor running.  This happened several times.  The motor was extremely smooth and very quiet and I would buy another one in a second.  The only reason I have the Mercury and not another Yamaha is because of the exceptional deal I got.  I saved $1200.00 on my current boat but the Dealer could not put a Yamaha on my boat.

It really depends on what your doing in my opinion.  If you are looking for all out power and speed it is hard to beat a Merc optimax.  If you want to stick with a two stoke and get great fuel economy then the etec is the way to go.  As for the four strokes I have delt with Yamaha 115's and a honda 225.  both ran really well and were uber quiet.  If I am listing the negatives of them I would have to say that the Yamaha's seemed a bit underpowered.  The Honda burnt the first set of plugs on like the 5th trip to the lake.  The Yamaha's never gave a minutes trouble, and the Honda has never had the same problem again.

I bought my Mercury 60 HP 4-stroke Big Foot 'cause I needed a new engine, wanted a 4-stroke, and the dealer had a 'whole bunch' of 'em in stock and gave me a great deal!  That said, I've always had a soft spot for Mercs 'cause my Dad had one on our old boat back in '59.  I learned to ski behind that engine, and must have skied a million miles before it gave up the ghost in '81!

I miss those days!

Yamaha 90hp, this is the motor I would like to have. I have a 1988 70 hp Evinrude that had a total over haul around 100 hours ago. It’s a great running motor that pushed my 16 pontoon boat real fast. Now she mounted on the back of my 24” rebuild. Not done with the rebuild, should be with in the next month. Cant wait to see how it performs.  Top speed and gas used are the number 1 question. I know pontoons are made to cruse the big or little ponds, and I’m good with that. I really like just crushing around checking things out. But when I push the throttle all the way forward. I want to go.

And from reading the above poll, I think the 65 hp Suzuki may be a Junker. OUCH!!

404 error here also.  I vote for the yamaha. even though we are running a merc. because that was what it had when we bought it last year.

Well this is unusual according to the other posts. I know I already voted on this pole. Set as though I was still elg. to vote though. So I voted for none of the above to see if it would take and it did.

Can't vote, but I like the Mercury on my new pontoon.  I probably would have been just as happy with a Honda or Yamaha...

I really wanted a 4 stroke when I bought my toon and all they offered was Mercury. I was ok with this after doing alot of research on them and having owned a couple of their 2 strokes in the past. But I've always been partial to Johnson/Evinrudes and owned many of them. Still have a 1991 70 HP that runs like a clock. If BRP offered a 4 stroke, that's what I would have bought. A Honda would have been my #2 choice because of their excellent history of reliability..

Not able to vote but I have a 150 2 stroke Merc Saltwater series that I've had since '05. No troubles and would rate it high. Just got a 150 4 stroke Suzuki that so far is silky smooth and so quiet you really have to check to make sure you turn it off before getting off the boat. It really is that quiet.

I've heard nothing but positive reports on the Suzuki's. A neighbor at the lake has one on his toon and had no trouble in several years of operation. The 4 strokes sure are quiet at idle...
