I've heard nothing but positive reports on the Suzuki's. A neighbor at the lake has one on his toon and had no trouble in several years of operation. The 4 strokes sure are quiet at idle...

Hi Rick....that's great to hear. I've read a lot of good comments about Suzuki as well as Honda, Merc, Yamaha, and others. Sometimes it gets to be information overload. So with all things being somewhat equal...I went with the Suzuki because it was, well, the lest expensive. Hey, what can I say, we're on a budget and price is a big consideration.

I just purchased a new pontoon with a 115 hp Suzuki 4 stroke.

It is so quite, you better make sure they key is in your pocket after you dock, otherwise, you may leave it running.  That happened to one Suzuki owner on our lake.  He pulled up to his dock, got out, and because he could not hear the engine, left it running overnight.  No harm done other than a lot more hours on his hour meter.

Welcome to the forums Bob (AKA looneytune). Great bunch of people here and we're glad to have you join us. We sure would appreciate some pics of your boat(s) in the 'Show Off Your Pontoon' section (or rebuild depending if you have before/after pics), as we'd love to see them. Also tell us your story in How did you come to join the forums? (just click on the red link and tell us all about it ). You probably did like a lot of us have. Looking for pontoon accessories and either found it through www.PontoonStuff.com ebay site or web store. Jim (administrator) and Andrea (pontoongirl) Myers (our hosts) have excellent staff members to help them help you find whatever it is you're looking for your boat and has excellent shipping and customer service. Be sure to edit your signature line to include details of your boat and motor so folks won't have to ask for it if questions arise later.

Those Suzuki's are some quiet engines and from everything I gather, very reliable. Good to have you here and pics are always appreciated..

Well, If you have seen my rebuild, I selected the Yamaha 115.  The wife and I wanted to be able to have a conversation with the motor running, and not leave a cloud of smoke everywhere we went on the lake.

Did a lot of research, and talked to the owner of Boat Store USA in FL.  He convinced my to try the Yamaha - felt from the controls to the reliability, power and quiet running it was the best.  I'll be back after she has been running for a while to see if I made the right choice.

For what it is worth: after all of my research Suzuki was my #2 choice.

Dave

We have a 90 hp Johnson 4 stroke.

On our other boat we have a Honda 4 stroke (20 hp) and we have a friend who has a Suzuki 4 stroke (90 hp).  Both of these motor are cold natured, have to pump gas to it and crank it a few times before it fires (almost brand new).

The Johnson fires off first time, twice so far.  But we haven't let it sit for a month and then crank it.  So for the moment I vote Johnson.  (if it will let me vote now.)

As you can see I've got or have had many. Plus working in a dealership I've worked on them all. My preferance is Merc. optimax, although not as quiet as a 4 stroke, the fuel economy is right there, and when you say giddy up she's gone. Yamaha are the most mech & user friendly. Very little return problems, just routine maintenance, which could be done be the owner. But would rather have a root canal than work on a OMC VRO, especially the V4 model's. Sorry I call um like I sees um.

At present, I have a1992 225 Yamaha and must rebuild the carbs every 3 to 4 years due to varnishing.  Something about the way the motor was built.  I can not disconnect the fuel line or run it dry.

For the new ride, I am leaning towards the E-Tec, but I may not have much of a choice depending upon the toon.  If it comes between 2 equal choices, it'll depend upon my mechanic and what he says.  He does make dock calls.

My vote goes for my Volvo 5.0 with DuoProps.  Only wish it were a 5.7 cause my boat is a bit heavy. Still pretty easy on gas last summer.

CGBosun, i think that you and I are the only ones the with inboard.... I vote for the inboard motor, naturaly aspirated, due ease of work and hp given off... course... not an expert in this but i just think that they have best power and smoothness..... I have 4.6 which has plenty of power for my boat and decent gas mileage ...not wasting a tank a weekend... and at $80 a fill up... can get VERY expensive otherwise....

What I find funny about this is that YOUR Johnson 90 and the Suzuki 90 are the SAME ENGINE, both made by Suzuki.  Only difference is a few parts on the Johnson are different to allow the use of OMC/BRP type controls and guages.  Though the Johnson motor looks better than the black suzuki (I' have a 98' Johnson 70hp 4 stroke with 1500+ trouble freee hours.
