Well, hello all. I am mid-project and hopefully I will get some pics up with the help of some resizing of the photos.  I came to this site after talking to 'Annette' who was extremely helpful when I placed my first order for furniture and carpet, etc...  I have appreciated the help from the project site.  Keep up the good work.  Mike

I found this forum by looking for pontoon accessories such as ladders, grills, etc.  Then, when we began experiencing some problems, I clicked on the forum to see if anyone had any info that would shed some light on our situation.

We have a 1980's Sylvan that had to have everything replaced except the pontoons, the rails, and hopefully the motor.  The motor starts, but we're anxiously awaiting a first launch.  We are first-time boaters, and first-time re-builders, but not shy about trying different solutions to old problems in order to save some money.  So I posted a question, and expect to post more.

Don't forget to put details of your boat and motor in your signature line.

So here's my 'How did I get here' post.

Two years ago I bought a 1986 JC pontoon 20' with a 55 horse Suzuki. I have a camp on a lake and two children (3 & 5) so a pontoon boat seemed to be the best fit.  It gave the wife and I an opportunity to get out on the water to fish or just ride and the kids weren't couped up saying when can we go back.

I found this site ,as did most, when looking for replacement parts, specifically decking and carpet.  The deck and carpet that are currently on the boat are original from 1986 and are scheduled to be replaced this spring.  I have carpet now (an xmas gift from my folks) and my plywood should arrive at the lumber store on Wed.  So within the next month or so I will be getting the boat out of storage and beginning my rebuild of the deck.

After reading a couple of the rebuild threads here and the nearly 50 degree weather I am getting very motivated to start the project. I'm sure some questions will arise during the project so I thought I would join to be able to utilize the knowlege and resources of those who are members here when and if the need arises, and I will try to document my project as it happens and post here. Hopefully lots of pics, I know most everyone, myself included likes to see pictures.

We found this site looking for toon furniture and we found a treasure trove of other help/info.  We are refurbishing our '88 Sweetwater with new carpet and new furniture.  Will try to get some pix uploaded soon.

We found the site before we bought our pontoon as we were not sure what model we would end up with and were doing as much research as possible.  We had considered several boats in varying conditions (the 'get a loan on a newer boat' vs 'get an old boat cheap and fix it up' trains of thought).  Prior to this boat we had a 19' Bayliner cuddy that we owned for 12 years...incidentally there is a boat almost identical to our previous boat a few slips down the dock.

We eventually went the 'get a loan' route, not without some hurdles, but as I am not *that* handy with mechanical stuff, we decided that boat payments were less stressful than taking on more repair/refurb work than we could handle.  I can do small projects but lack the equipment and expertise (and time) to take on bigger projects.

I still have my eye on the under deck ladder, though.

I have always wanted a pontoon so I finally decided to purchase on older one in order to rebuild it.  Honestly I did not know about this site until I started googling for pontoon boat furuniture.  Once I found this website and the forums it really energized me to complete the rebuild of my boat.  I will have pictures coming soon.

Actually PontoonStuff doesn't have as many members as another one or two I know of, but that's also because I purge those who haven't been on in a year or if I get undelivered mail (and not active). That way it keeps the database small and with those mostly active. Some visit and ask 1-5 questions and go on about their way never to return, others become addicited (like me, scbadiver, rickdb1, dahogman, darrklim2, and many others), rickdb1 I know has been active for many years on several forums whereas this is the only pontoon forum I've been a member of. rickdb1, dahogman and a few others are on 1-3 other pontoon forums. However this is the ONLY family friendly (as in no profanity allowed period) pontoon forum, which suits some and some not . As for actiivity, during the winter months, we may only have 1-2 posts a day (and usually from those in the mild winter areas), but occasionally darrlim2 will talk about ice fishing (always wanted to do that, one day I'll visit him and do that). In the end, as long as you find out what you need, or help others, its all good.

I began browsing the site last year when I bought my first pontoon, and became excited to refurbish it to make it 'My Own.'  I googled for pontoon furniture and found this site.  I have ordered some small things so far, and I am preparing for the Re-Deck Kit.  The furniture will come later.

I found PS via the ever-popular Google.  Having bought a 14-footer about a month ago that needs some work, I went looking for places that sell restoration products... PS was first on the list and has, quite frankly, been the best site... even if their seats won't fit my little guy.  I can't wait to install the new stripes, and will soon be ordering new carpet!

I bought my pontoon July 3 2007 after looking for quite some time.  My wife doesn't like water or boats, so I thought maybe - - - a pontoon would be the least scary.  My Dad had a homemade pontoon when we were kids.  I think he built it from plans in Popular Mechanics.  It was about 12' long - the pontoons were made from 15gal steel barrels welded together - it had a paddle wheel in the back which was powered by pedals and later by a 3hp briggs & stratton motor.  My pontoon was found on an online classified site.  I drove about 250 miles to pick it up, and came back home later that evening.  The next day was the 4th, so we broke it in the very next day.  I began looking for furniture since the seats on my toon were not the best shape.  While looking for furniture, I came upon pontonstuff, and these forums.  They have been very helpful in providing information about a lot of the questions I had about boating and pontooning.  Last week I ordered new furniture from ponttonstuff.  It has been shipped, and I am looking forward to installing it next week.  I will post some pictures and updates on my furniture project soon.

I found this website in July 08 when I was looking at a pontoon and needed some expert advice about if it was worth the money or not.  Everybody was great and very helpful with that decision.  After I bought the boat it had motor troubles and everybody was even more helpful.  If anyone happens to remember that post it turned out that it was the main ground for the engine.  It always seems to be the ground:)  After I fixed that it has run like a top.  I've been lurking ever since and figure I need to start chiming in a little.  I hope to be starting a complete rebuild soon and will have a lot of pics.  I know you guys like them:)

Found the site while looking for some information on shining up my toons. After reading a while, I realized I needed to read more. While reading I also realized that you guys are my kind of people so ... here I am.
I have always had ski boats but bought a '85 Suntracker about 5 years ago. I'll never go back. I live in Northwest Arkansas and have a place on Beaver Lake - great crappie fishing and cruising.
Looking forward to all the great advice I know I'll be getting and having some fun.

I bought my first boat about 5 years ago.  It is a 1998 Reveria Cruser.  It's about 20 foot long. Has a 40 hp Mercury force motor on it.  I am 67 years old and have never owned a boat.  Right after I bought the boat I had to have conplete knee replacement on both my knees. I have 3 sons and they have used the boat a lot while I was rehabing my knees.  The boat was not used at all for the last 21/2 years.  I  had a lot of trouble getting back to my life.  The boat has been through a lot itself, being neglected quit a bit.  I am able now to get started and have decided with my boys help to completely revive the boat.  I have never been into boating but with some help I think it will help me spend time with my boys and really get to know each other. My oldest son Shawn is 32 years old and is been in the air force for 10 years and has came back state side being restationed in Alaska.  My middle son, Josh, is just turned 30 and works for 'Hunt Brothers Pizza'. Drives a truck down around South Alabama.  Make's good money and really loves the boat.  My baby boy,Adam, is 26 and has 4 children all under 4 years old.  He works as a programmer for a palitizer company and does great.  Loves the boat and I Hope he will help us.  I will need a lot of advice from all you good people.  My project will start in two weeks. thanks for listening.

I bought my first pontoon boat on Wednesday!  Needing a swim ladder, I started my search and ended up here.

As a relative novice to boating (two years with 20' I/O Bowrider) and a complete novice when it comes to outboards, I'm sure I'll be a frequent question asker...

/what ladder should I buy, considering a couple of regular users (yes, me included) top the 250 lb mark :)

Since I weight 282, I'd recommend this one from PontoonStuff, it'll go right up underneath the boat and slides out to deploy. judgepw, don't you have this one?  http://www.pontoonstuff.com/pontoon-boat/594-under-deck-pont oon-ladder.asp

My husband Bob and I have dreamed of having a boat and for some reason a pontoon was what we both wanted, so that was the easy part.  We dreamed and discussed it lots of times and then one day I took a ride down C-470 in Colorado and saw a lighthouse with boats.  I was tired of dreaming I wanted to take action so I went to have a look on that gloomy day.  OMG!!!! boats brand new are expensive even for the little ones and I just can't justify in this time of my life spending that kind of money on something brand new when it could be something to scratch an itch, if you get what I mean.  My husband wants a big boat, and I want a brand new boat and needless to say after I dragged him to the 'lighthouse' dealership we both were very discouraged.  Well I am stubborn as well as my husband and I went searching for pontoon parts to see if we could just build one.  Hey we found a build your own on some site for way less money than buying a new one...called them.  BRICK WALL....unless you wanted a 16ft boat or less they have to build it and we are back up where we can't justify spending that kind of money.  So stubborn as I am I started surfing some more and found this site as well as others but was drawn back here every time.  Bob was on Craigslist ( I hope I can say that) day in and day out and we found a 24ft pontoon for sale at a price we could live with...we put together what it would cost us using material from this site and yeah we could justify the cost.  The boat turned out to have 24ft pontoons but the layout only allows us 20ft of deck so as I look at it we are both compromising but happy.  I get basically a brand new boat but I have to build it and he has 4 ft less than he wanted.   And here we are excited, nervous, scared, one day have a clue and another clueless but ready to do this!!!!!!

My wife and I have talked about getting a boat for a couple years now. I thought a pontoon would be a nice idea for the family (we have two daughters, 3 and 9).
However, when I mentioned it to my wife, she wasn't too keen on the idea. This spring, we made a deal where she could get another dog (we already had 3!) if I could get the boat.

I figured it was a good time to buy a used boat due to the economy, etc. I started off looking at deck boats. I thought they'd be great for teaching my daughters to water ski, great for pleasure cruising, and maybe okay for fishing. After looking at a couple, however, I was discouraged, because of the lack of room and I didn't feel they were optimal for fishing. Some do have pedestal seats in the front and/or back, but it just wasn't the same as a pontoon. There are even those with tops that are more like pontoons, but then finding one laid out the way that *our* ideal pontoon layout would be was going to be difficult in a used boat.

After looking at a few boats, I brought up pontoons again with my wife. Turns out the original distaste was just that she didn't want a stripped down pontoon
without any furniture. Communication is such a great idea.

After convincing her we wouldn't end up with such a craft, I spent about 3 weeks on Craigslist and half a dozen other sites looking for used boats within a 250
mile radius. When I would see boats for sale, I would research them through the manufacturer's website, but I would also research various features and topics. It was in this research that I found pontoonstuff.com. I knew right away this was a top notch site with a great deal of knowledge and knew I'd be coming back here to post questions after an eventual purchase.

Anyway, there were a lot of *very* nice boats for sale and as the weather warmed, the prices started getting closer to blue book values. There were still those people wanting 50% over blue book, but the realists were starting to show up, as I anticipated would happen.

By this point, we had decided that our priorities were, fishing, cruising, skiing/tubing, in that order. That meant our ideal boat would have rear pedestal seats preferably front pedestal seats as well. There were a ton of boats with couch seating in the front, but that just wasn't going to fit us for what we wanted the boat for. Too bad too, because there were some beautiful boats with nice motors that had couches up front. I did think about removing them and putting in my own pedestals and I did think about buying a stripped down boat and doing a rebuild, but I just don't have that much time on my hands with my work schedule.

I was also looking for something in the 22 to 24 foot range. I wanted a lot of room for us to move about while fishing, but didn't want it to be too big, because
I still wanted a shot at the skiing. In the end, fate shone on us. We found a boat where the seller had posted very little information about it and no pictures. I contacted him and got the pictures and more details about the boat so I could research it. It really does fit us perfectly, as it has rear pedestal seats, front pedestal seats inside the cabin *and* pedestal seats outside the cabin in an extended bow area that he had custom designed when he purchased the boat.
It even has two extra holes for putting 2 more pedestal seats near the two front ones inside the cabin, or moving the others to these slots. It has a changing
area that I plan on putting a potty in to make longer cruises pleasant for my wife, daughters and whomever else is with us at the time. And the furniture is in good condition, with a couch and tanning area mid-boat for my wife. :) It has a 90HP motor that does move the boat nicely, but I'll be doing a fair bit more research
into a 3rd toon, bigger motors, etc. to see if I can improve on that. The best thing was that he sold it under blue book value!

This website truly was/is a great resource for pontoon owners. My wife even found it independently when searching for accessories for the boat. :)
