Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!    Jeff woke me up last night to tell me about the award.  I was driving to work this morning thinking I had a dream.  He asked me this evening if I saw what happened on the forum and it was then I realized I wasn't dreaming.  My parents live in the house next to us and he went over there to cover the lemon tree and turn on the lights in the other citrus trees(too cold at night here and parents in AZ on vacation).  Jeff came in carrying a long round object over his shoulder asking if it was for me.  It is my new carpet!!!!  He found it on my parents sidewalk.  I do not have a sidewalk just grass.  I am happy they put it on the sidewalk.  It is awesome.  The color is even better than I expected and will go nicely with the red, white and blue uphostery we are using for the seating.  In case anyone didn't read through all the posts, this is the Jasmine Blue 20 oz carpet I ordered from Pontoon Stuff with the re-deck kit.  The rest of my re-deck kit was in Tracy, CA today and expected to reach the W Sacramento terminal tomorrow.  Whoo-Hoo!

linda i have a question about your seat covers as i was goin to do the same thing (execpt have my aunt sew them cause i have no sewing skills) but i was worried about if you were wet and sat on the seats the water would go thru the towel and get into the seat foam. did yuo put anything under the towwl between the seat foam and towels? or is it not a problem. thanks for the pics.

The seat covers are covering the dried and cracked seats.  The original uphostery is between the towel covers and the seat foam.  We are having all the seats recovered right now. I will still use the covers to protect the seats.  The covers will protect the new vinyl from the effects of the sun as well as soak up the water from the swimmers.  The towel coverings dry pretty quickly after getting wet.  It also is more comfortable sitting on the toweling.  The vinyl upholstery can get pretty hot to sit on if in the sun.  I don't particulary like my legs sticking to the vinyl from sweating.  I think the covers are a great accessory.  It work well on this boat as all the seat remove from the pedestals to make the bed and are not hard mounted.  I am sure using some creative stitching you can create covers for any application.

Hello again, I am back with more pics of the rebuild.  The following pics are the deck removal.

The helm still needs to be removed, Jeff did not remove it yet as he did not know the best way to remove the steering.  Of course, I found a thread in this forum with some suggestions.  Jeff will be tackling the steering this weekend.  He ran outside at 10 pm one night to see if there was a pin as one of the threads suggested.  He did not see a pin and will probably take the steering loose from the motor instead of at the helm.  He is concered it will not fit up through the hole in the existing deck piece still in place.  The hole in the deck is right on top of the toon.

Hey Linda,

Looks like you are getting a lot done!  Hey, I got my deck off this past weekend, and I have the same rubbery black seem sealer on the crossbeams where two pieces of decking butted together.  What are you planning to use at the seams to seal them when you put the deck back down?

PS...my console/helm is the only thing left standing since I haven't yet gotten the courage to disconnect the steering cable....maybe this weekend....good luck with that---it probably won't end up being that bad after it gets done!

The deck was removed.  The upholsterer is ready for us to get the new seat pedastals to her so the redecking will have to wait.  Here are some pics of the seat pedastal rebuild.  Jeff and I used my Dad's handy dandy table saw to pre-cut all the pieces to assemble the pedastals.

We cut all the pieces and assembled the 4 forward pedastals in one weekend.  This included taking a trip to Lowes and Home depot to find a particular glue Jeff wanted to use.  It is a 3M product, Marine Adhesive 5200.  We used this to glue the peices together as well as screws.  We upgraded the pedestals a bit as the original was made with some pieces in 1/2 inch and some in 5/8 inch.  We used 5/8 inch all around.  We are using regular exterior sheating.  Jeff is caulking all the joints and painting with an exterior paint.  The outside of the pedestals will be covered with marine grade vinyl upholstery.

The first seat in the row of four has the new seat backs sitting on the new pedatal.  This has become a 3 weekend project as the Marine Adhesive takes 7 days to cure.  We also ran out of 2x6 when pre-cutting all the pieces so we had to cust the final seat supports and assemble the 2 dining seats last weekend.  Jeff also sanded all the edges (our upholsterer requested we sand the edges to make her job easier and not to snag the new vinyl), he caulked and started to paint the forward pedestals.

We will finish all the sanding, caulking and painting the pedestals this weekend.  Jeff will also start to rebuild the helm once he gets the steering cable disconnected.

I should add, it is a very good thing we are doing the re-deck this winter.  When removing the furniture, galley and head we found more places that were waiting for a foot to go through the floor. The bolts would not come out of the ladder of the end of the head structure because the wood was so rotted. Jeff pushed the ladder sideways and the bolts came through the floor.  Same thing with the head structure, tilted it sideways and it came loose bolts and all.

Here is Jeff's design for the arm rests at the end of the forward seats.  We saw a totaly tricked out party barge on a website and it explained how they installed 10 inch sub woofers into the arm rest to give indirect sub sound.  Jeff (aka Tim Tool Time Tayler) is making it so!!! The follwoing pics are the speaker boxes that will connect to the arm rest cabinets.  The first one is the speaker box with the baffles and it will also be ported.

This pic is the upper cabinet and arm rest.  It will have two cup holders in the top.  The pencil line will be the door to access the cabinet for storage.

This one is the speaker box and cabinet/arm rest attached.  There will be furniture type legs like is on a couch to hold the cabinet off the deck.

Never seen anybody post where they are building their own seats for custom upholstery, pretty cool.

Hi peppyjd,  We purchased the redeck kit from PontoonStuff.  Here is the contents of the kit.  The roll of stuff in the pic is the sealer for the joints.  You lay this along the cross members and it seals the joint as well as seals it to the cross member.  The box includes the desk screws, fence risers, fence bolts, tar tape, carpet glue and spreading trowel.

This is the pallet of CCA treated deck plywood.

... and this is the Jasmine Blue carpet.

Here is some of the entertainment equipment.  The amp board is installed in the helm.  The stereo is a Pioneer AVIC-Z1.  It has a 30gb hard drive.  When you load a CD you can automatically download the contents into the hard drive.  It has a touch screen display, GPS with navigation, (I can find the gas stations and shopping areas when out on a lake or river), DVD player and all the bells and whistles of a stereo system.  Getting all the functions to work was a little interesting.  The deck is designed to be installed in an auto that has a parking brake and neutral safety switch.  Nothing Jeff aka McGiver cannot overcome.  We actually work together as a great team.  I read instructions and he applies the technology.  This thing even has a rear camera to see what is behind you.  It powers up a JL Audio amp 6x450 and a Rockford Fosgate 4x400 amp, 200 watts out of the radio with a total of 4500 watts.  The amps power up 8 Infinity Kappa series speakers, 2 10 inch JL Audio sub woofers and 4 Infinity Reference series.  The 19' HD LCD TV hooks right up to the stereo, you can view a movie on the stereo screen and the TV at the same time, Full Metal Jacket is awesome with this sound system.  Jeff says you will here us in NY. (I will be deaf).  The TV is powered with a 1500 watt power inverter.  Mr McGiver is not done yet, we are adding a dual mic karoke system this year. This is all powered with 3 golf cart batteries located under the captain's seat.  The golf cart batteries work quit nicely.  We have a solar panel charger on the roof to trickle charge the batteries.  We also carry a small generator.  The motor batteries are separate and not on the same system.  We went to the river on a Friday afternoon played the stereo with amps on most the entire weekend and watched 3 movies and did not have any battery issues.  We still had power to spare. (The amps have a separate on switch, they do not come on automatically when the stereo unit is powered on.

Very nice an alot of familiar looking work! If you haven't got your foam for the cusions there are some good resources online. I bought the foam for all my benches and beds on my pop up online. They cut to size and the bed sleeps better than my air bed here at home.

Hi Brainkinley2004,  thank you for the suggestion.  Our upholsterer is providing the foam for the benches.  We haven't decided on the bed yet.  Jeff rebuilt a car for our upholsterer so we are getting a trade for the work and supplies.

Sounds like a great deal! Make sure you get the good foam. I did not realize it but there are alot of different grades. Some cost a little more but last longer for sleeping on. Im sure your upholsterer knows what you need.

Thanks again,  this is good advise.  It is best to make sure the quality, density and application is considered.  You wouldn't want to use something that is designed for an interior application.  The foam we chose is for outdoor use.  We went on the firm side but not too firm that you think you are sleeping on a board.  Our forward benches are used frequently for the bed.  We went with a foam that is sufficient for sleeping as well as sitting AND will hold up for years to come.

So far I suppose we have been lucky. He do not normally leave our boat unattended in public.  The Z1 is in the console and has a smoked plexi door that covers the face of the A1.  The little door was alread a part of the console.  I think it once held another player or something or maybe was the glove box.  We store the boat at our home and we are out in the country so again not much visability.

It's looking good. The kid in me says ''I love the sound system'' the fisherman in me says ''your going to scare away all my fish.'' So I am torn between whether or not to put a big stereo on my toon. I'll probably just keep it simple. Thanks for posting your progress. I love seeing others build projects, they always give me great ideas.

Back to the rebuild pics.  We had a boat rebuilding party on Saturday.  Thank you very much to friends and family for all your help.

There was sanding of the pedastals goin' on

Pedastals and seat parts were being painted:

Staples were being removed from the roofing material: (the wood is wet and has dry rot in a few places and must be dryed and repaired)

The helm and the last of the deck was removed.  Holes were drilled around the rusted screws and the board removed.

The old tar tape was scraped off the cross members using a fancy tool made out of a car leaf spring.  My dad uses these leaf springs for scraping, prying, weeding and a whole lot of other odd jobs.

The polishing began on the toons, well one of the toons:

I'm just jealous that you have some reasonably warm weather for doing your work!  We just barely cracked 0 today... just barely.  I went out and tried to do a little work on the boat, and quickly changed my mind after touching a piece of aluminum with my bare hand.

RR37075 ::  We had a great time with family and many friends last summer.  The little ones caught the fish on one of our overnight adventures.  It was quite amazing as my friend and I were in the water sitting in the floating island, the stereo was on low and the kids still caught fish.  Nice fish too!!!

Scottbee :: Did you stick to the aluminum?  We are getting up into the 70's and I wish we were far enough along to set the deck and carpet but we need to ginish getting her cleaned up and we have to get the seat pedastals to the upholsterer.  While the seats are being completed we can work on the deck.  We may be having some great warmish weather right now to work on the boat but we need rain if we will do any boating this year.  We can't even launch in some of our area lakes as there are no ramps in the water.  They make dirt ramps for the little fishing boats and jet skis but we could not launch.   We still may be able to launch in the river but there a a lot of rocks and other hazards, sand bars.  You can't see them until you hit them, not good!!!

Jeff and Bro tackled removing the helm, it was easier than he thought.  He removed 1 bolt and nut and the steering cable was loose to be unwound.  The steering cable is fed through a tube and appears to only go one way to be rewound once we are ready to put it back together.  The wood of the helm was rotten as expected and the rebuild began.

Jeff had a plan to remodel the helm to include a bar in the front of the helm.  He needed to make measurements as the helm sits on the deck with the support beam of the roof and the fence in place.  He took the deck board and set the old helm in place, set the fence in place and clamped the beam in place to get the measurements.

There is still a fair amount of work to be done but this is the progress.

We always have a DD or a couple depending on the amount of boats rafted together.  Alcohol and moving objects (boats, cars, motocycles, etc) do not mix.  The cost of gas was so high last year we generally anchored or beached and stayed put the entire weekend.  We would occasionally take a morning cruise to no where and back to see the sights and other boaters.  We would also occasionally send a smaller boat to a dock to pick up additional passengers and dump the porta pottie.  Any passengers not staying the night must also have a DD for when they are dropped off at the dock to return home in their autos.  It looks like we have too much fun but we are safety minded.  We make passengers wear life jackets if they want to take a dip after dark, drinking or not.  There is a spotter to watch the late night swimmers as well.  The water can be a dangerous place for swimmers and must always be respected.

Another weekend of wonderful CA weather to finish the painting of the pedastals.  Whoo-Hoo!!  The pedastals are painted thanks to a lot of help from friends.

We have decided we own a boat yard!  The boat is all over the yard.  The front yard ::

The side yard ::

The back yard ::

We got a little anxious to see the new deck and carpet up on the boat so on went the plywood ::

And out rolled the carpet ::

Jeff worked at the speaker boxes during the week ::

Jeff will complete building the helm during this coming week.  More painting next weekend.  The cabinets that attach to the speaker above is almost completed.   Next weekend we should have all the interior seating and cabinets ready to go to the upholsterer.  Then will come cleaning and polishing the railing on the fences.  We worked a little at cleaning and buffing the toons.  We are concerned about using the A/C coil cleaner on the toons because we are on well water and concerned about the cleaner leaching into our ground water.  The boat is on the trailer so we are also concerned the A/C Coil Cleaner will soak into the carpet and wood of the bunks and what will that do to the bottom of the toons??? I found a powdered cleanser 'Zud, heavy duty cleanser'.  I am using a Black & Decker cordless ScumBuster Extreme to scrub the toons.  It has a scrub brush attachment that is not scratching the toons.  Our toons do not have too much build up of gunk but enough they need to be cleaned before buffing.  I am scrubing with the Zud and then wet sanding with 600 grit sandpaper.  It seems to be working well.  I didn't take pics of this but there is plenty of toon to scrub and polish so will take pics to show how it is working next weekend.

Another weekend half over and I was flat laid out on the couch at 5 pm. I did make dinner for the husband and one remaining at home child, she's seventeen. I am tired, I man handled a grinder while playing with different buffing compounds to see which one I like the best.

I have the pink stuff, the white stuff and the green stuff. The green stuff worked very well with my Black & Decker ScumBuster, until the rechargeable battery ran down, I think I forgot to charge it after the last time I used it. I bought a 5 inch buffing pad that has elastic and put it over one of the attachments and it worked pretty good.

The green stuff is called Master Formula Metal Gloss, $15.00 for a 12 oz bottle. We purchased this product at the Easy Rider Street Bike show a couple of years ago. This product can be used by hand buffing and produces a finish on aluminum that looks like chrome. You can also use it with a buffer, grinder or the ScumBuster as I proved today. (Jeff kept telling me my ScumBuster would not work because it doesn't spin fast enough. Eat my polish Jeff).

I had a mission to polish some railing today so I had to use the big boy grinder (actually it is very nice as it is not heavy) I picked up some pink stuff Jeff brought home from work and it just wasn't doing much. Jeff came by and I told him I didn't like his pink stuff. He informed me this was a polishing compound and not a cutting compound, what do I know. I am sorry I do not have the name or manufacturer of the pink stuff. Soooo out comes the white stuff, the white stuff is a 3M product Perfect-It 3000 I found this product on line for $39.95 for a quart so I guess this is expensive also but Jeff gets a discount through work for this product.

Because I was using the big boy grinder and about a 10 inch pad I was afraid I would use too much of the green stuff (no discount on the green stuff). The white stuff worked very well and I managed to get almost all the flat surfaces of the railing polished.  Whoot!!  Master Formula also has a sealer that is supposed to last a year. This is also $15.00 per 12 oz bottle.

I still think the Master Formula green stuff worked the best. It is very fast working when using a cloth and your own elbow grease and works exceptionally fast when using the grinder. I will use the green stuff for the areas of the railing that have ridges as I can use a cloth and my fingers or the ScumBuster to get into the ridges. I found the Perfect-It 3000 worked quickly with the grinder. I did not try the white stuff with the ScumBuster yet, the battery is charging. I hope you enjoy the pictures I took today.

The pictures above shows a nice shine on the fence railing compared to the roof railing laying on the ground next to the fence.  You can see the dull color of the roof railing.

Great description and pics of the techniques you guys used. The railings look real sharp. No experience with the Master formula, but some Toon Brite clear coat would work well and will last at least a couple of years.

I will have to get some of the Toon Brite clear coat.  Sounds like a winner.
