As many others have posted, my toons also take on water each year. Unfortunately, my toons do not have plugs available to drain the water out. I know that many newer pontoon boats have toons that have drain plugs welded into the bottom of the toons to allow water to be drained. I would like to install (weld) in some drain plugs. Does anyone know where I can purchase drain plugs so that I can then have them installed (welded) into the pontoons?  Thanks ... Fred.

Welcome to the forums Fred (AKA) Parkstribe. Great bunch of people here and we're glad to have you join us. We sure would appreciate some pics of your boat(s) in the 'Show Off Your Pontoon' section (or rebuild depending if you have before/after pics), as we'd love to see them. Also tell us your story in How did you come to join the forums? (just click on the red link and tell us all about it ). You probably did like a lot of us have. Looking for pontoon accessories and either found it through www.PontoonStuff.com ebay site or web store. Jim (administrator) and Andrea (pontoongirl) Myers (our hosts) have excellent staff members to help them help you find whatever it is you're looking for your boat and has excellent shipping and customer service. Be sure to edit your signature line to include details of your boat and motor so folks won't have to ask for it if questions arise later.

As for the drain plugs, you could drill a hole in the tube and have a threaded sleeve welded to the log over the hole and then you use a threaded male plug to seal it. Or you could do like I did on a previous toon and drill a one half inch hole in the rear of the log and use a bailer plug to seal it. Works well and it's easy and quick to remove. But if you go the welded route, I would simply call a local welder that has experience with aluminum and tell him what you need. They will know what to use..

A weldless alternative option is to use aluminum nutserts.  You can find them at many hardware stores (old-style hardware stores... not big-box places) and they will usually have the poor-man's installation tool also.

Drill the appropriate sized hole.. slather the nutsert with some JB Weld (for added hermetic insurance) and then install the nutsert in the hole with the tool.  After the JB has set up, install the appropriate size stainless screw with a fiber or rubber washer.

I have done this on my logs, and in my specific case I used 5/16-18 nutserts.  With a 5/16' threaded hole, the logs drain kinda slowly... but I'm in no hurry!

I said nutserts in the previous post, and really should have said 'Rivnuts'.....
