Alright, so I am still painting and watching paint dry isn't very much fun...So, I decided to start putting my console together. I haven't started wiring anything, and am not looking forward to that part - maybe this week sometime.

I'll be adding a digital depth finder under the Tach (so I left a little space there)...

man that is sleek!  How fun was it to cut all those holes for the switches?  I have to say that the silver is awesome.  Very elegant.

Ah, I see you went with the same Captains Console I did.  I'm not sure how much you plan to do before you tackle the steering system but I would encourage you to do so sooner than later.  I had to get pretty physical with the thing and it took up some pretty good space on the back side of the console.  It would such to get something installed and then find out that you have a space issue.  I like where you put the stereo...I went with the same spot on mine as well.  The wiring was pretty intimidating for me too.  But, after it was all said and done the only gauge that I have to work on is the new Trim gauge.  All the others worked.

The cutting was actually easy. I used a rotozip with a plastic/wood cutting bit. Cutting out all 8 holes took about 1-2 minutes per hole, so around 15minutes.

I do have a question for you mman3187, did you have to use a piece of wood behind the plastic (steering) to make for a thicker neck? The plastic seems a bit to thin, but I haven't really done any due diligence so I am just wondering...

I didn't us a piece of wood but I did fabricate a piece of aluminum into a bar to go across the bottom two bolts into the console just to be safe.  I ended up cutting the hole a bit larger than I needed to and I wanted the extra support.  I would take a pic and send it to show you what I did but there is no way I can get a pic of that up inside the console.   I grumbled about the space to work inside the console at one point but now that it is all said and done I really like the fact that I was able to get everything to fit and it saved floor space.  Have fun. Mike

Your console looks great  It has a very clean look.  I'm debating if I should go with the same console or with the new larger one for space.   If it's not too much trouble could you tell me how many inches it is from the edge of the vinyl on the right across to the edge of the vinyl on the left?  From looking at the pics I would guess about 20 inches.  I don't know if I can fit my console mounted shifter or not.  Thanks

Thanks DLCulbertson. I finally finished painting my rails/fences last night. I am very satisfied with the results and the color couldn't be more perfect. Matches the cream color in the Deluxe furniture to a 'T'. Next step is to finish pulling out my old flooring and replace it. I am finally glad to see some space clearing up in my garage... I bought the 28oz. Sahara Tan carpet kit several months back. Once that is done, I should start to see the light at the end of the tunnel... And I originally thought I could get all of this done over the course of 2 weekends! HA!!! I am 3 weeks into it - working on it during the week (as weather permits) and about 2 cases of beer. Unfortunately, once I have a few beers I don't wanna work anymore...

Two weekends?? Ha is right!!  If it makes you feel any better, I started the first week of March and figured floating it 4th of July weekend. We put it in the LAST weekend of September!! Beer? two cases?? I had that gone by the start of the second weekend. I worked on it about daily too, a few hours before work, an hour at lunch and after work till dark most days. Things kept 'coming up' that caused me have to change direction and then do this before I could do that. You know how it is. But, its all worth it in the end. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. Hang in there, it's looking great!

Robbie can tell you that I'm still working on mine for the past year. Course I had some motor problems (mostly lower unit) and I delayed the rebuild until last September but I'm still trying to finish it and the weather just hasn't been cooperating (and from the forum talk, it hasn't been too kind to others either), course I'm more handicapped than I want to be, but that's life I guess. So some of you guys are really good at staying with the job, cause it's really is a JOB  so happy rebuilding

I am figuring 2 more weeks, especially now that the hard part of sanding and painting is done. I knew that would take me awhile. I am planning on having the new floor and carpet in by the end of this weekend and then it's rewiring the console (UGH!) and tying all the furniture down.

Alright, I was playing with photoshop and came up with this design...yes it is a bit cheesy, but I thought it was kinda cool... The font (lettering) on the back of the pontoon is in coca-cola font (La Dolce Vita - The Sweet Life for those of you who don't read italian). I kinda liked the idea of following the coca cola wave, and incorporated that into it...still haven't decided on the wave yet, but the lettering has been ordered.

Hey, that is pretty snappy.  I might just have to set me up with a country/hillbilly/southern style font for my 'Pig Pen.'  I don't know a thing about photoshop.

conunuu,

The plastic opening across the gauge cluster (from vinyl to vinyl) is 23.25 inches. I hope that helps...

So much about the pontoon is square (deck, rails, top, seats) that I think the coca-cola wave looks very nice and would be a nice contrast.  I say go for it...looks very cool.

My gosh, why didn't anyone warm me about how difficult it is to take off the old flooring? The carpet came off easy enough, but the self-tapping screws are old and bitter (I can't get them out). So, I am going to go get me a circular saw and rip it out piece by piece followed by the roto-tool and cut off the old self-tapping screws. That is probably going to add at least another day to the tear-down.

Why yes we did warn you , so did some others . Its in my rebuild thread, took me and scbadiver about 3 hours I think. We cut the wood out between the supports, then used a grinder (2 wheels) to ground off the heads, pop the remaining wood off and then cut off and grinded smooth to the supports. We didn't worry about the screw remnants underneath the supports. Took about the same amount of time to square up the frame, layed the plywood, glue, layed and rolled (80lb roller I think) the carpet.

Oh and here's where I warned about that   http://www.pontoonstuff.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2136&a mp;PN=3&TPN=2 about halfway down.

Wow! That's the way to go... I was thinking that was the route I would have to go, but now that I saw your pics...I know it's the way to go. Cut and Grind!

Apparenly...some people have it a little easier than others...for some of us though, EVERYTHING is rusted .  You will get a certain sense of satisfaction from just cutting thouse little screws right off.

I started cutting the deck off as you all suggested (I actually feel like I accomplished something). I got about half way done before it got dark on me... This is way easier and cutting those little boogers (screws) off did make me feel better peppyjd. It took me about 2hours (solo) to get half way done... So, my next question is how do you take off the sticky black tar from the seams? Thinner?

Something to think about using... 1/8th sheet aluminum.  No more wood to worry about ever again!  I got lucky that some did this already to my bass buggy.

Slow---Now your making progress!  I'm sure that there are a million methods for removing the black tar.  I found that I could peel a significant portion of it off.  I am going to try a paint scraper (razor blade type) or hefty putty knife for the rest.

Koon,

I thought about the aluminum flooring but it was way more expensive than I planned. I bought the marine plywood locally - not cheap either...

I got the floor in (alot easier than ripping it apart) and since there was still daylight decided to lay the carpet... I'll finish cutting off the excess carpet on the sides this evening and maybe even start putting the painted rails on. I am finally starting to see the fruits of my labor.

I should have worn pants or knee pads. I scuffed up my knees while installing the carpet.
