great topic for my question... I am going to a larger thickness like 20 or 28 oz. carpet.... it won't squash down to put the side rails back on... hhhmmm....may have to think about stickin with original thickness of carpet.. .cant afford all the aluminum railing to be replaced......

may have to think about that.....

Its not the railing, its the rub rail. We actually bent mine out a little and use a rubber mallet to pound it on, we made it fit

I wonder if it would be easier to get the rub rail back on with a 20oz carpet? Anyone out there use the 20oz carpet and have issues getting the rub rail back on?

Been thinking about this, wouldn't this work and much cheaper than replacing the rails? Take the rub rail, cut it right down the middle, then have it welded back together, shouldn't that give you the 1/16th's inch you'd need for the thicker carpet? (as long as the welder knows). I know my friend could do mine that way, then take a grinder and smooth down the weld, good as new. I've seen him do that on other projects, clamps the pieces in place so he could weld and fill in the gap. Now that I think about it, even those glazing rods I bought could do the trick (maybe).

Charles... thats a great thought.....

cut the peice in the middle... weld 1/8th in center....creates the space for 20oz. carpet... need to look into that.... fortunately know some welders so shouldn't be a prob

thanks for the idea... and yeah,.... those rails are NOT cheap!!!!!!!!

Just cut the bottom lip off...it doesn't show.  That's what I did too when I built mine.  I didn't even screw it down, when you get the rails mounted up it sandwiches every thing together just fine...  Now I'm hungry and I'm going to go make a sandwich...

That wouldn't have worked on mine, I have to screw it down because nothing else holds it, but cutting off the bottom lip might work. My fence rails bolts directly through the carpet & wood

The brackets for the toon just butted up to the motor pod.

Posting pics for goldome14 of his rebuild progress

His beautiful assistant Sidney age 10 (otherwsie known as the boss) is checking the list and trying out the comfort of the newly laid carpet.

I see he decided to put the replacement fencing on the outside like I originally did (but did a better job than I did). One of the gates.

another gate

looking at the inside of a fence section

and now looking at the outside of that section

Yes, do tell about the new fence skin install.  I will not tackle that this year but that piece of the project is on the list.  My skins are the dimpled kind and it will be next to impossible to get the old decals off.  Nice job on the third toon also.

The installation of the 3rd toon was actually easy. I just used the brackets that are welded onto the tube and bolted them at the crossmembers. The paneling is the vinyl paneling that is sold on PS but I got some heavy duty 2 sided tape and put that on the aluminum. I cut the paneling to size and then laid it on the taped railing. One side of the paneling has more of a glossy finish which is the side I wanted to be seen. I cut the paneling, with a stanley knife, from the opposite side which kinda left a sharp edge on that side but I got a smooth edge on the glossy side. I will be putting some pop rivets in to help hold the paneling. It did require 2 people to skin the one section of railing since it was a 126in piece by 18-1/4. I am really please with the way it looks. I saw a new Bennington (last year)  with the paneling on the outside and I thought it looked really slick. My daughter is drawing some ideas for decals for the boat. Since we are Notre Dame fans, we are going to go with a 4 leaf clover design that she did.

Sean, I meant to ask you, isn't that a ladder on the port side? a long ladder it appears and how long is it?

Here's a pic of the new console. I found out last night that I have a bad fuel pump. The only time this boat has seen water is when it rains

its about time for an update , console looks very nice and with the latest gauges no less. So how did you discover a bad fuel pump? If memory serves me right it was (last year?) that you found a motor. Guess you've been too busy until now to get any work done.

Thanks for the encouragement Brian. As for the update Wildcat, I got this motor last year and had it put in. I went to the guys house that installed it and I heard it run for just a second. We didn't have any water running thru it so it didn't run for long. I then worked on replacing the flooring and carpet over the winter/spring. I didn't get the console and new steering system done till recently. Now that the console is in, I'm ready to take it for a test run. MrDiesel(forum member) came over and determined that it was probably the pump that was bad. Since he's forgotton more about motors than I know, I'll assume he's right.

Diapharms do have a tendency to rot out if not used, so did you replace the pump or just rebuild it? (or either yet?)

I haven't done either yet. By the way that ladder that is in the pic is just a 4 step ladder, nothing special.

It's alive!  Just in time to prep it for winter   They did not offer a rebuild kit so a new pump it was.  Man I can't bieleve that thing EVER ran with that pump...looked like the previous owner used it for storing water .  Old fuel lines were conpletely pluged shut.  Motor seems clean on the inside, I think it just sat with fuel in it for a while.  So I'm going to take care of a few other small things I saw, put some Stabil in it and runit again, and back to storage so I can start on a new boat for ME !!!

So goldome14, has your daughter Sidney finally worked out the 4 leaf clover design you mentioned months ago? Or you decided on some other logo of sorts?

BIG THANKS to Mr.Diesel for getting the motor running. It always helps to have talented friends.

Wildcat- Sidney and I have settled on a 4 leaf clover design but we haven't taken it anyplace to get a decal made. I'll wait for spring for that.
