Being the techie kinda guy I am, how many of you non-techies was aware Microsoft is getting ready to release a new version next year. Thought Vista was strange with 4 versions? Guess what, there'll be 6 versions of Windows 7 (and that's not even counting the servers). Windows 7 beta is currently available to the 1st 2.5 million people for download (you register and they'll email you a key). http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.asp x Basically a spinoff off Vista, except this one will work on lower end machines that Vista wouldn't (supposely), which I guess I'll find out sometime this week when I install it on my laptop as well as on a virtual machine at home and at the office.

I am downloading it as I type this. I will put it on my home PC, on a second HD and see how I like it.

Never could figure out why it was so extremely slow installing (6 hrs). Seems several things could factor in like support for legacy floppy drives or video card issues. But got it installed on a virtual machine with 1 gig of ram and 64meg virtual drive. Looks like nothing more than a glorified vista ultimate, but at least Symantec 10.2x installs on it just fine for antivirus protection. I do like the new version of hearts, spider games, and themes look good. Still hadn't got around to exploring how to make the menu menu look like windows 2000 but at least now the control panel can be a menu icon by just a check mark. Next few days I'll see if my domain admin tools will install and run better than vista does. Think I'll need to get Exchange 2007 to get the new tools from it.

I tried several times to DL it but it would come up with a corrupt file message and want me to start over again. I gave up after the 6th time and (sixth key).

Sounds like you're using MS download manager, it'll pick up wherever you left off at. (meant to say you're not using the download manager they recommend), its a separate download, but within the same, does require an active x piece I think.

So I stayed up until 1:30 installing Windows 7 Beta and of course it failed. Turns out that it has issues with most on board video. If I remember right that was a problem with one of the Vista Beta's as well. So I guess I will just have to wait until the next Beta is released.

Well I guess I'm going to try their newer Release Candidate on virtual pc today and see if it has been improved on since the last time I tried it. Along with Ultimate and Enterprise 7 and see how that compares to Vista.

I have been running the RC on my home pc since the day it was released. It is working fine and is still running. No issues so far. It even works with my cheap/slow on board video card that gets a 2.8 on Windows rating scale.

Well I went with the final version this past week and so has my boss and co-worker. We all seem to like it but you'll be stuck with IE8 and you can't go back to an earlier version. 7 has some really nice wallpapers (which can run in slideshow fashion by default or you pick a favorite wallpaper). Also by default, you'll only see one icon (trashcan - recycle bin), so if you want the traditional look of Windows 2000/XP, you'll have to enable the icons. Windows 7 also seems to work very well with less memory than Vista did and also seems to be better at hardware than Vista was. I installed it on two of my Dell Inspirion low end B130/1300 laptops and there was no need to install any drivers unlike Vista. Wireless works just fine as well. With Vista, it works pretty good with 2 gigs of ram, (min of 1 gig for performance but better with 2) whereas 7 seems to work very well with 512megs of ram and I bumped the one laptop to a gig of ram. So with a week of testing with the version that's going to be released to stores next week, I have to say I like it and I'm usually pretty fussy about OS's.

I'm still working with a 2001 Gateway, 256 mb ram and a 40 g drive, 1.4 speed pentium 4. It's coal fired with a bias ply paddlewheel.

If you want a 90 day version of Windows 7 Enterprise (x86 or 64bit) and you meet the criteria, look here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee388361.aspx
