Went out with the 115hp 4 stroke Yam today,, compared to the 2 stroke, at WOT lose 6 MPH BUT used 50% less fuel. It seems that the 4 stroke is about 500RPM slower than the 2 stroke.

Why when I trim the motor up I do not gain RPM and lose speed????

I'm surprised you lost 6 MPH. If your RPM's are down 500, you might need a different prop with less pitch. What are the wide open RPM's?  Might also need to raise the engine up on the transom some. The 4 strokes are heavier and will make the back end of the boat sit a little lower in the water, along with the prop..

Thanks Rick WOT 5200 and I was also thinking of lifting the engine as it is in the lowest position. I put the same prop on the 4 stroke that I had on the 2 stroke. The 500RPM drop is that at 3800(2stoke) I would run 18MPH now I have to run 4300 to run 18. Is the common with a 4 stroke

Did you raise your engine? Is the 4 stroke at the same mounting height as the 2 stroke was?

Darren

Engine is at the same height,, working with props as the 4 does not have the ump as the 2. I think we got the prop worked out, I lost about 4 MPH with 4 stroke, BUT uses about 40% less fuel. Going to lift engine shortly

I am almost willing to bet that rasing the engine should get your speed back. From what I have seen in the past anyway. This might also affect the prop pitch required though.
