Allen, this forum isn't the one you were talking about a poll was it? You should see a icon next to upper right of this post area. As for trolling, I just have rod holders, front and sides (not doing anything past the console). I put my 6ft rods in front turned outward (so 4ft sticks out past the toons) and put the 7.5ft rods next on the sides followed by 12ft rods (when crappie fishing). I use the trolling motor to troll for crappie or main motor when trolling for bass (but again trolling motor after I locate them). And yes, I'm just itching for this weather to warm up without the 30mph gusts

How may rods can you have per person down there? It sounds like you are deep sea fishing.

I've seen some rigs with at least 6 and I think I saw one some time back that held 10 (crappie riggings). Big T bar on the back of a boat. It looked store bought.

We are allowed ONE per person. Any more than that and you will lose your right to fish and if they want they can take your boat, truck etc.

ONE pole while trolling that would really suck. Ive seen the T bar setup but was hoping not to have to spend that much money. There is usually 3 or 4 of us on the boat and we will have 8 to 12 poles set out.
Charles was not lookin to set up a poll right now, was just curious why I could not.

So you're saying you don't see any poll buttons in this particular forum?

There ya go, so whenever you're ready to start a poll, go for it. If you mess it up, just delete the new poll and start over (takes getting use to at first)

I troll all the time with our toon. The most rods I troll with is 4. Reason being is make a lot of turns and don't want to tangle up. All i use is 2 rod holders in back and one on each side. All mounted to top of rail. Bought them at sporting goods store. Works well for what we do up here in Pennsylvania. Can't wait till spring to get those walleye and pike. Good Luck

P.S.
When fishing BIG lakes I run 2 planer boards out the sides and add an extra line half way out to the planer boards. Just like Using 2 extra rods. Works well.

I troll for crappie. For some reason, it seems they only like the bait presented from one direction ... so there are a lot of turnarounds when I get into a bed or miss a bite. I run two pole holders off the back of my boat and use heavy rods (which also double nicely for catfish poles when we tie up at night). Lighter rods when trolling move too much ... when the heavy poles start bobbing you got a fish on. It's just easier with heavy poles. We don't have a lot of problems losing fish. I like to let out about 25 yards of line with a small Hot Tiger Hot-N-Tot and let the good times roll. My money zone is 5-10 ft of water but my pattern also includes 30+ plus depths and we catch fish there too. If I don't get any hits I'll let out another 5 yards or so to make sure I'm in the strike zone in 5 - 10 ft of water. The small Hot-N-Tots are rated for 5-8 foot depth and I like to keep them low. The big Hot-N-Tots are supposed to dive like 10 - 12 and funny thing is when I use the bigger lure I catch bigger crappie. This also works across the board - I catch bass, catfish and crappie on these Hot-N-Tots. It's kinda fun to reel in a big cat with 30 yards of line out. I think the Hot Tiger works for me because it mimics both a crawdad and a frog with a hint of a shad - all of which are abundant where I fish. Just my two cents worth ... you might give them a try.

When trolling for crappie I troll straight down off the front. We call it a spider rig. I use 4 poles. I'm usually alone, so I've found that in order to keep from tangling I just kep going when I get a fish on. I troll from a chair in front using my remote MotorGuide so it's no hassle to keep moving while I take the fish off. My live well is also on the front. I just use 'Quick Draw' rod holders from Cabela's mounted on the rails. They're fully adjustable and easy on-off. I like 'em.
When trolling for hybrids (big fish...4-18 pounds generally) I troll off one rod holder mounted on each side using line counter reels. The most productive bait down here is a Hellbender with the hooks removed and a Pet Spon trailed behind it. The little plastic diving planes also work trailing a Pet Spon. It requires a stiff rod, but you need it anyway because these things hit like a torpedo going in the opposite direction. Upon a strike, I immediately go to neutral (without turning to either side) and get the slack line into the boat and then grab the rod with the fish on. I can get the empty line in the boat before losing forward progress so tension is kept on the line with the fish on it. Sometimes it goes slack, but not often. IMO, it's very important to get that slack line in the boat. I've had 'em wrapped in the prop, sink to the bottom and hang up on stuff and loose the bait, and of course, get tangled with the other line with the fish on it and loose the fish. I troll a lot.

I use rail mounted rod holders, this year I have purchased a set of inline planer boards w/trolling rods and line counter reels, I am trying them out this weekend.

I fish like the judge does pretty much. Don't troll for crappie but do for the white bass. We use standard rod holders that mount on the rails. Usually 2 - 4 on the boat at one time, most of the time I just drive and let everyone else fish. I just wait till we find them schooling. Then it's my turn! I use the Fishseeker with a pet spon tied about 18 - 24' behind it. The reason I use those is because they can be tuned to run exactly to the depth you want.
