I understand the importance of having insurance on anything we own in todays world & I'm trying to figure out what I NEED as far as insurance on my pontoon boat. I live in Virginia & based on all that I have read on the official site, I see no mention of requirements for boaters insurance. Can anyone advise me as to what I SHOULD have?

You are correct about not a requirement for insurance. I think there at least be some kind of liability insurance requirement. Just my 2 cents anyways,
I insured my boat  for  $3000.00 over the NADA value. (to cover the odds and ends that I've added along with accessories..life vests, fish finders ect..) trailer included  with 100,000' life and 10,000 medical for only $8.00 a month on my home and auto policy(state farm). That's super cheap fI think anyways.

Thanks for the info jall65. I'm going to call my agent (Nationwide) tomorrow & see what I need & the cost. It scares me to think about not having some kind of insurance. I know my boat & trailer is cover as long as it is hooked to my truck but being on the water is an entirely different story.

It's a good idea Les---I've gotten some online quotes from some of the big carriers.  This place is a big insurance carrier for boats as well, and may have some memberships perks.  Might be worth looking into.

I would cover the hull and motor, medical payments, liability, and pollution liability. If you go offshore, you may want to add in-water towing.

I've had insurance from 'that place' for longer than I can remember.  They have always cost less for me than any other insurance (even when combined with a homeowners discount).  Since I got the new boat (and now the waverunner), I added the Unlimited towing option for those 'unexpected' nautical situations.  I've never had to be towed, but ya never know...

However, I've towed more boats to the dock/launch ramp than I can remember.

Might try Progressive. Have had them for years and they are quick to follow up on claims. Only had one possible incident and they were on it quick and were willing to cover the claim without question. Turns out they didn't have to, but nice to know they would have if needed. Great rates and we don't even have our other insurance with them..

Sorry to jump onto this thread late, but I wanted to point out a couple of things regarding boat insurance. Be sure to ask questions and understand the details regarding partial loss -- what is covered and how much it will pay. Some polices are 'agreed value', others are 'depreciated value'. Depreciated value costs less and in the event of a total loss you get the current value of your boat, not the replacement value or what you paid for it. I once took a lightning strike on a boat with depreciated value coverage. It was not a total loss, and the amount of my loss was well below the value of the policy.  However I soon discovered they depreciated each individual part at a rate of 10 percent a year. As my boat was over 10 years old everything on it was considered depreciated to nothing unless I could produce a receipt showing that it was less than 10 years old, and only then recovered a small part of the replacement costs.  I was beginning to wish I had lost the entire boat so I could at least recover the book value of it.  Read and understand the details.

my isurance is pretty basic as far as $$ goes its about $100 for 6 months and its covered for $3000 for the motor and $4000 for the boat, more than its worth as it sits right now and medical and liability are $300k i think. i have mine bundled in with my homeowners and auto, never looked around for better prices

I just talked to my insurance agent about boat insurance & like JeepGuy I can bundle it into my homeowners & auto policy too. What I was told came as a surprise because they also said because the boat was over 20 yrs old I had to have a marine survey which can cost upwards to a couple hundred dollars. What they couldn't tell me was WHO did the marine surveys. Anyone know anything about this issue? My boat will not be ready for any kind of survey for at least another month due to setbacks so I have no idea what they would be surveying to begin with. Any help would be appreciated.

Les, check with some of the local marina or boat brokers.  You might even find something in the yellow pages under 'Marine Surveyors'.  This is very common on expensive boats and there are usually a lot of them around.

Les, I got my insurance through Boat US and they didn't require a survey.  Perhaps it is based on the value of the boat.  Prices and requirements vary widely, so shop around a bit over the phone or internet if you are so inclined.

Les, when I had my old wooden cabin cruiser the ins co.  required a survey every 5 years I think it was. The guy came out and measured everything on the boat, visually inspected everything, climbing down in the bilge, engines, fuel lines etc. Made noted of everything in the cabin and head, condition of everything etc. I suspect a pontoon survey would take about 10 minutes and not cost all that much from what I know. If they really do require it, it won't be a big deal usually.

Thanks for the info Robbie. The girl at the ins. company told me it cost around $150-$400 to get a survery done.  Not sure if she knew what she was talking about but I WILL find out tomorrow. I told her for that kind of money I could inspect it myself. And several other boats too.

I've had some sort of boat insurance for nearly 50 years.  Boat US and/or Progressive are the only ones I'd even consider.  BTW, that survey is gonna cost at least $300 and probably more.  For an extra $100 with Boat US you can get a 24/7 towing provision for unlimited tows.  I think it's $100, if not, it's very close to it.

Les--- The mechanic I used is also in the insurance business and sells marine insurance.  Would you like his card?   He can probably fix your boat as well should you have a claim.  (Cracking myself up).

I think I will 'pass' on that offer jenn. It might too long to process a claim if I were to have one.  How was your vacation? Are there any fish left for me to try & catch?   How did the the pontoon perform? Questions questions questiosns & we NEED PICTURES PICTURES PICTURES.

I suspect it might be a conflict of interest Woody....and scary all the same, lol!  One stop shopping.

Truly, this is an interesting thread though, and I didn't realize there were different loopholes for depreciation vs. replacement value.  I need to get insurance myself within the next month so all the info is appreciated.

Actually Les...didn't go fishing or kayaking at all!  Since there was so much to do, we couldn't do it all at once.  but next weekend we are definitely going catfishing.  I'll try to post some pics here shortly, but will put them in 'start your own personal thread' since they are not really rebuild related.  But I guess I should give some updates on how the pontoon performed.  Decisions, decisions.  Les, I require an email update on how things are going with you.

On the towing issue, BoatUS charges $34 for unlimited towing in
freshwater lakes & rivers up to $157 for the offshore unlimited
towing plan.

I added my boat on with vehicles and RV with Nationwide, then they came back and said they needed a marine survey because the boat was over 26 feet. They said it would cost anywhere from $300-$800! I told them they were CRAZY and immediately dropped the policy and signed with Progressive who did not require a marine survey. However, they originally tried to insure it for less than NADA so I had to pay a little more to get the insurance up to what I have invested.

So my advice, shop around and be careful!

I have also been looking for boat insurance recently, and have some advice, especially if you planning to get a policy on an OLDER toon that you are restoring.  First, it seems that if your boat was a total loss, they would give you pretty much something like the NADA value.  For me personally, I probably put twice that amount into the rebuild, on top of what I paid for the boat.  So, if you have an older boat, and you plan to insure it, apparently it is VERY IMPORTANT to keep EVERY receipt.  I called two places mentioned in this thread, including the one with the dancing gecko.  None required a marine survey, and only this place  would insure it for more than the NADA value.  They stated the value was $2500, but would insure it up to $4000.  The premium on their policy was smack dab in the middle of the other two.

On a lighter note, the dancing (and now unfortunately talking gecko) had some exclusions in their policy.  Among other things, they would not conver you boat in the event of war, insurrections, or civil wars.  They also wouldn't cover it if was damaged by the government, taken over by pirates (really), or was damaged by radioactive materials.   Although I guess I should stopp chuckling because I am moving it to Lake Anna, which cools the local nuclear reactor.

Jenn, you do have to be careful and ask questions, just as you did.  And be certain you save receipts of every piece on the boat as it is assumed to be original age unless you can prove otherwise.  Also, some policies exclude damage from named storms (can you say Katrina, Rita, Ike, Gustav?  I can!)
