Hi my name is Neil 74, an this is my new project. It is a 1990 18 foot Fiesta pontoon, she has a 1994 Yamaha 50hp and rides on a performance trailer. The carpet will need replacement and the seat frames need to be redone, I've removed the worst ones an will rebuild and replace as I repair them.The top looks good except for one aluminum frame broken, So far the initial $1500.00 dollars an $300.00 more in parts an she's been tested on her maiden voyage, enclosed are a few photos of her performance any advice will be greatly appreciated. Looks great and sits well in water. Is that paint on the bottom half of the logs or just corrosion?

Second pic in the series looks like it might have been bottom paint although needing another one if its still in brackish/saltwater.

Yes sir It was bottom paint sometime in its past life, I will be running it in salt an brackish water. First I'll get her running right an then check for leaks. Would I be better off repainting or stripping an polishing. What holds up better?

In your case, I agree with kartracer28 as this basically is a no brainer. Polishing in your case when it's already been in brackish/saltwater for a number of years, and from the looks of the prior paint, its already pitted and polishing it would reveal more pitting than you'd care to know about  . In this case, clean it, prep it and repaint that section. You can polish the part that isn't painted.

Thanks guy's I 'm all for less work an more fishing:) Good advice after next run I'll check pontoons for water, an if good paint and polish it is.

When I got my boat, each entire log was painted. I stripped paint from the top half of my logs-----then repainted the bottoms after seriously cleaning and sanding. I agree with the others....you may not get the shine we all envy even with all your HOURS/DAYS/WEEKS of labor....lol. I recommend repainting.

More fun took boat out yesterday an discovered water squirting out of one pontoon, looked like the water pump on my Yamaha. Going to rig up air valve to pump in 2 lbs. of air. Is it going to be possible to weld holes up with all that bottom paint or will I have to JB weld an fill with foam? My research shows about 50-50 on using foam ,would there be a better option? At the ramp I pulled the screw in plugs at back of my pontoons, I got a couple of gallons from one toon but 6 times as much from the one with leak. Will JB weld and another run be a good idea to see how much it leaks at one run?

You don't want to add foam, as it won't be the closed cell type and it'll just make the toons heavier (and won't add buoyancy). Make absolutely sure you use an air pressure gauge that can accurately detect that small air pressure as most can not and you'll end up over pressurizing and might cause a bigger problem then you have now (or hurt yourself). JB Weld might help if it was a small pinhole but I' afraid you're going to find lots of small pinholes especially in the areas where the bottom paint (was) and somewhere I'll venture you have a stress fracture where the toon brackets are welded to the toons. Or you just lots of pinholes. (just my 2 cents worth)

Thanks Wildcat Dude, if there are lots of pinholes would it be better to weld or will I be chasing my tail? I saw bubbles on the toon that had the weep hole, the hole was just above the trailer bunk. When I pushed down with the weight of my upper body the bubbles stopped so I am assuming it was pulling in water. Looked all around an saw no other bubbles, upon removing from from the water I saw one visible leak pushing out water, I checked hard but will admit with it on the bunks could be many more. If I purchased closed cell foam would that work? or do you have any suggestions that will appease my wife that I haven't just thrown out all money invested:)

Couple guys I know that posted their solution was to have a sheet of aluminum skin welded on the bottom half of their toons. Also take a look at Alvin Lab Metal http://www.alvinproducts.com/ as one guy like it pretty well

You could always replace them if they ever get real bad or you decide the expense is worth it but that's the price of staying in brackish/saltwater. Requires a lot of preventive maintenance.
