Hey everyone!  Here are some pictures of my first boat before I purchased it!  I've cleaned it up since then, and I'll upload some pics of that later.  Thanks for everything.  I got this boat with a 60hp Merc Bigfoot and a glavanized trailer for $8,600.  Anyone with input on whether or not I got a pretty good deal?

The seats are in great shape (one minor place the vinyl is cracking).  The motor seems to be in great condition.  The only thing very faded is the bimini top.  Any input?

-Paul

Hm, if I click the little arrow next to my name on the posts page I can view the images.  If I click the actual link they don't show up.  Hopefully you can all see them!

Some people have problems, others like me don't. It's well documented on the forum in the off topic section although its been a very long time since we've updated. We're hoping the owners of the site will upgrade the software, and they were going to earlier this year, but other problems developed so I think now its on the back burner again.

Nice looking toon. I would say you got a fair deal with the shape its in. You might want to consider getting a cover or putting it in the barn to maintain that condition. Congrats on your purchase

I bought some Toon-Brite cleaner today and a polish by 3M my local marina swears by.  Anybody hear of the 3M stuff?  Also, has anyone had any luck with sharkhide polish?  I will post before and after pics by next week.

I've used the 3M  polish.  It's pretty good but requires a lot of elbow grease.  More than some others I've used.  A little of it goes a long way.

I heard a little bit goes a long way and to use sparingly.  I did get an electric buffer, so I should burn my elbows out.  I'll be trying it all out Saturday.

Be sure not to use high rpm's and get it too hot.

If its an adjustable rpm, 800-1200 will do it. I think I set mine to 1000 most of the time.

Is it true you can get a good two years off of one polish?  Also, I'm probably going to polish the outer parts of the toons, basically because I don't have the means to raise it up off the trailer yet.  Plus, who's looking at the inside/bottom anyway?

Can I polish the aluminum  siding?

The fence part? Can't say I've ever heard of anyone doing that as it usually has graphics on it or they peel it off, clean it and paint it. Now if you're talking about the fence rails and rub rails, sure, I did, although I haven't finished it yet.

Alright, alright!  I've got a good report and a mediocre report on cleaners.  This weekend I took my Toon-Brite and (hearing that the spray gun that comes with it isn't to good) put it in a nice little spray bottle.  Sprayed it on one of the logs, and...

...most of the toon turned white, except for part of it that had streaks.  I guess I should've listened to the warnings, and not try to do the whole log at once, although it didn't even have 5 minutes to dry.  Well, I discovered the trick (which means you'll burn through this stuff!)  If you continuously spray the toon, taking into consideration that the Toon-Brite is actually sliding off of the toon, you should get an even coat of a nice clean toon!  Well, I finished one 27' log, and I had very little Toon-Brite left!  Figured I'd go boat for a while, and well... the log got dirty fast!  I came back and repeated the cleaning process.  On to the polish...

I watched vids on how you can get these looking like stainless steel.  I think I didn't do it right the first time, because I could only see a blurry reflection of myself when I was done.  I took my electric buffer (not sure what the rpm's ran at), and applied polish to the whole outer side of the toon (the whole 27' log)... Bad idea.  I guess you're supposed to buff it out before it dries (like the directions say, 2sq ft at a time).  Anyway, the toon did get pretty nice and shiny afterall (but not like stainless).  I used this polish by 3M, on the recommendation of a guy at my local marine shop.

I'll upload some pictures later, but I will say, it wasn't too difficult, but I should've taken my time, one small area at a time, and I think I wouldn't been a little happier.  Any feedback is welcomed.  Anybody else have great luck on polishing?  I only did the outside of one log so far.  If the log turns dirty after one boat trip, I probably won't do this again for a long time.

Nuvite #7 is a pretty good cutting polish. When you finish polishing your toons you will find that it is indeed a daunting task.  Lots of time and labor intensive if you want that mirror finish.
