I have an '85 60 HP Mercury, 3 cylinder, 2 cycle, that have the 3 coils.  #1 Coil is route to #1 Cylinder, #2 Coil to #3 Cylinder and the #3 Coil to the #2 Cylinder.  I'm having trouble with the timing and running rough, and was wondering if maybe #2 and #3 are switched.  Anyone know?  Thanks.

2 & 3 are reversed but check your color code to make sure coils are what they are. Coil #1 leads to switchbox is Green and Black, #2 is Green/White and Black and #3 is Green/Red and Black, that's what is showing in my book.

Thanks for your help.  I'm guessing that the Switch Box is what provides the proper Firing Order?  Sort of what the round distributor does on an old car?

Switch box is just a junction coordinator if you will, the trigger determines the firing/timing. If you don't have a maintenance manual/service manual then I highly suggest one

Yes, I have both the Seloc and the Mercury Shop Manuals, but neither one explains this.  Since the firing order is 1, 3, 2 I think that is why they had been routed the way they were.  I had already tried switching them to 1-1, 2-2, and 3-3, but it wouldn't start at all.  With them switched, it would start and idle fine, sounded normal to 3000 rpm, after that it sounded like it was out of time.

I first changed out the Stator, but it didn't make a difference.

When I was trying this, I noticed gasoline dripping from one of the carbs and found out it was flooding.  Stuck open needle valve.  I just cleaned all of this out and am about to try it again.  Thanks for the help.

Look in the back section of the Seloc manual, if yours is the same as mine, it'll be page A-35. What's the serial # of your motor, that way I can verify the wiring scheme is the same. Either that, or rickdb1 (and there's another Rick) both of whom are excellent with info on motors. It could be someone has changed the wires at the location of the switchbox, but let me know what the colors are from the coils to the color coming out of the switchbox. At least you know it did run with way it was before.

The only other thing I can suggest is to make sure all the linkage is connected properly and that the timer base (located under the flywheel and also connects to the throttle linkage) is advancing when the throttle is advanced. Otherwise you could just be experiencing a fuel problem at this point. You've gotton excellent advice so far...
