It is time to change the oil on my 4 stroke Mercury Bigfoot. Is there some reason I should not use a good grade of motor oil such as Pennzoil or Valvoline in the appropriate viscosity, rather than the Mercury which is around $7 a quart?

As long as you use an oil that meets the same specs as Mercury oil, then it will not be a problem. Since you are likely no longer are under warranty on your 2004 model, it's pretty much up to you.
