Ok, I'm trying to help Brian (briankinley2004) get something going in Arkansas. How many of you folks like to go to http://www.degray.com/ which is a State owned resort? I'm following up with them tomorrow. Room rates are very reasonable as well as something called a Yurt (a type of tent - looks cool), plus other tent rental sites/rates. But if any of you are even halfway interested let me know so I can give them a ball park figure for a group discount. I'll be coming to visit but probably only stay the night as I've got a lot to do on the Chattanooga, TN get-together Sept 11th-13th. Oh the Arkansas deal will be August 7th-9th 2009 and its near Hot Springs, Arkansas, due west of Memphis, TN and Little Rock, AR.

I live in Hot Springs so I guess that means I will be there.  Lake Degray is great.  That is actually where we spend most of our time in the summer.  I can throw a rock from my house to Lake Hamilton as well as having a private ramp to it in our subdivision, but it is just way to crowded on the weekends in the summer.  Degray is a much better choice.  Let me know if I can help with any information.

Send me an email John with your phone number, I might enlist your aid in getting info for me. I really want to get a post going on where the Arkansas meeting will take place (hopefully by this weekend if possible).

Sorry, I still haven't got in touch with DeGray State Park, I've been swamped at work plus my own problems with Hales Bar Marina not answering questions, so looks like we're moving to slightly north of Chattanooga (Island Cove Marina - much cheaper rooms, more on it later). But what research I've done so far of the Hot Springs hotels/motels haven't brought back very good news about them. The better facilities were much further out from town and not near the water. State Park seems to be the only reasonable rates and facility to handle a group, plus lauching, slipping several pontoon boats so unless someone really objects, I'm concentrating on DeGray. Should have more definite news about it tomorrow.

DeGray State Park is out, they are booked solid and taking reservations for 2011. So if we plan on having a get together at that location, then you need to call 2 years in advance. However, she did give me a recommendation for Claration Resort on the Lake. Aug 7-9 is looking iffy at the moment. If business is bad, it doesn't see to be there in Hot Springs. This hotel has their own launch ramp. Starting rates is $113 a night for 2 people. I've got a message in to the sales office so I'll see what I can do. Brian, you may have to reconsider Hot Springs area if this doesn't work out, or change your dates. Also on the State Park, in peak summer months, they require a minimum of a 2 night stay. I don't know about the Clarion yet, hopefully they'll call me back unlike the other resort which totally ignored my phone call and email. Its possible they were booked up for that date range and didn't feel they needed us.    That may be why I'm not having trouble getting discounts for a Sept time frame in TN

You could also consider Lake Ouachita.  It is 15 minutes on the other side of Hot Springs.  Very big (40,000 acres), beutiful lake.  A couple of options there would be Brady Mountain or Mountain Harbor.  However, they will probably be pretty booked up as well but never hurts to ask.  Plenty of camp grounds around the lake as well for those who might be intersted.  It gets pretty crowded around here in the summer.

Brady Mountain is out, they won't even talk about it. I still haven't heard back from Clarion yet, guess I'll have to call again.

Ok, called the Clarion on the Lake Resort and talked to somebody finally. They should get back within the hour on room availability. Only thing I'm leary about is having to sign a contract for a minimum of 12 rooms. If people don't reserve at least 12 rooms then I could be responsible for the rest of it, but guess I'll just have to wait on this contract and see what it actually says. They lease a launch ramp and there is a marina next door that rents party barges. This gal used to live in Lafayette, LA when I was there in the early 80's, she sure misses alligator meat - her favorite dish.

Which lake is Clarion on? Mountain Harbor may be an option on Lake Ouachita if Clarion doesn't work. If we have to go elsewhere thats fine too. We don't have a shortage of lakes around here ya know!

Ok, just got off the phone with the lady at Clarion Resort on the Lake, in Hot Springs, AR. Place has recently been renovated (within 2 yrs), interactive map of their location is http://www.hotspringsclarion.com/location.php. I'm getting the contract to rent a minimum of 10 rooms. The rate is 92.50 a night for 2 nights which will be check in on Friday, Aug 9th and checkout Sun, Aug 11th. If you stay longer rates will be MUCH higher as that's derby week there and that's why I had a heck of a time getting rooms and discounts. So if you want to book a room, send me or briankinley2004 an email and we'll tell you how to reserve to get your discount rate. We can get up to 20 rooms at that rate, but I've promised to reserve at least 10 rooms (minimum to get discounts). The marina is right outside the hotal, launch ramp is on the property to Lake Hamilton. Rate for a party barge for 24hr is $395, or $364 from 9am to 8pm or $321 for 8hrs or $212 for 4 hrs. Deckboat is more, as it has the 135hp compared to the 115hp on the party barge. Party Barge carries 12 people, deckboat 7, so you get more for your money's worth on the Party Barge (don't know how long it is), they also have Jet Ski's if you don't mind paying $80 an hour for it.

Ok, scratch the $92.50, there was miscommunication on the dates we wanted reserved. There will be hardly any discount (if any), sorry but I can't go on the hook for 2 grand to reserve a block of rooms. So if you want to go stay here, just call them and reserve yourself a room. Reserving early will guarantee you a room but if you wait until June, you're probably going to be out of luck. Sending an email out to all members this weekend to let everyone know of the Arkansas and TN get togethers.

Well folks, sorry to have to the Arkansas get together over to Brian to let him hash out the final details but with the date of August 7th-9th 2009, its Hot Springs and surrounding areas hotest season (and just more than temps) because its so close to kids going back to school and all. I'll be sending a newsletter out to everyone letting them know. The Clarion Resort on the Lake can be your meeting point scheduled for now, but Brian will be the final say on that location. That would be Lake Hamilton, I now turn it over to Brian to conclude the plans and assist him whenever and however I can. Vondy, never did hear back from you, but you'll find Brian's email address in his profile if you want to assist him with any questions he has.

Ok folks, I've made my reservation for Aug 7th-9th at the Clarion Resort On The Lake, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. At least I got a $20 discount for being 60 (age does finally count for something instead of just being old & senile)

So you decided to break down and do the whole weekend! I have not heard from anyone yet to commit for sure but I will be there. As soon as I have an idea of how many we can plan meals and activities. If anyone wants to discuss this or volunteer for anything just let me know!

Just got back to looking at this post again.  I should be available that weekend if I can keep my wife from planning anything.  And yes, crawfish is out of season that time of year (I'm originally from Louisiana).  There is always the option of cooking a big pot of Gumbo.  Brian, let me know if you need any help on this get together.

A good ol' Louisiana Bayou boil is always good (Shimp, potatoes, corn, sausage).  Wish I could get up that way and join you guys (I grew up in Searcy, AR), but doubt that I will make it up.  Sounds like fun!

Hey Vondy I am going to make a note that you are interested in helping and from Hot Springs. I may need a local contact at the very least. Right now I think if everyone going would just reserve their rooms before they book up (ok guilty I need to reserve mine although I can sleep on the boat)we would be in good shape. I am hoping we can plan more activities, food, etc in a couple of months. I am good on the big pot of gumbo and should have duck & sausage to put in at a minimum.

Will anyone be camping on their boats instead?  That is what the hubby and I want to do.

I am hoping to camp on my boat. My wife will probably want a room to bathe in, etc. As the ram rod of this thing I will probably need to stay around the hotel some but I may get one room and let her and one of the kids stay there at night and me and one of the boys may stay on the boat. I am not sure if there are any islands to pull up on like Ouachita or Degray. Vondy may be able to answer this. If not I will find out as I will be diving up there in June.

There are a couple of islands to pull up to as well as some coves to hide out in.  Not near as many as Ouachita and Degray though.  Are you wanting to camp on the boat or on the island itself?

Sorry for the quality of the map, but this might give you some ideas of the islands.
