Anyone have any recommendations for a trolling motor for a pontoon.
We just purchased our 2008 MonArk Fantasy 200 (20foot) fish n cruise about a week ago. It has a 25hp mercury two stroke. Single battery onboard. Purchased a Hummingbird 580 fish finder and installed that myself this last weekend.

Hello Mike(skipperchewy), welcome to the forums. Got a great bunch of people here. Glad to see you come join us. Be sure to post some pics of your boat(s) in the 'Show Off Your Pontoon' section (or rebuild depending if you have before/after pics), as we'd love to see them. In my opinon 55 pound thrust is plenty for you.

I really like the MinnKota PowerDrives as they have the low profile foot pedal. But I just checked bass pro and it seems the V2 models are suffering some problems like MotorGuide has (fancy smancy doesn't always cut it). But I love both of my v1 PowerDrives, both are PD55 models and at high speed (5th) it pulls very hard and fast for a 20ft. Look on craigslist or ebay for a used one. I've got one from both places, craigslist though was cheaper (no shipping) so saved almost couple hundred there.

Oh and those other MinnKota models have HUGE foot pedals so unless you're sitting off the floor where your feet dangle, its hard on old leg muscles (do I have any - not sure  ), plus those with big foot pedals have a very short umbilical cord unlike the powerdrives 15ft or longer cords.

This might sound crazy but I mount a hand operated transom mount trolling motor. Put a bracket on the front of the toon to mount it to just below the deck. I lock it in place, turn it on, and use the toon motor do the steering. Works great unless the wind is moderate. And in that case it doesnt matter what you have you are going with the wind. You can work the bank decent for bass fishing but works better for trolling for crappie, stripper. Best of all, you can take the motor off and it fits in one of my seats, nothing on the floor when you dont want it.

I have a 55# MotorGuide and I love it. Click one lever and slide the entire thing off, leaving a plate about one half inch in height and 4 inches W by 8 inches L. It has the transducer inside the motor pod. No foot pedal or control cables to mess with. The controls are remote. It comes with a plate with foot control buttons (rt, lft, fast, slow, on/off) which is portable and you can move it around on the floor wherever you want to put it. It's about half the size of a dinner plate and is very light. You can also buy an accessory control about the size of a keychain opener for your car which you can carry in your shirt pocket or hang around your neck, etc. with the controls on it. The motor installs with three bolts and a connection to the battery. I use a dedicated battery which sits behind the front fence. I mounted the depth finder on the lower rail of the front fence and tossed the front gate. When the grandkids get big enough to go out on it I'll rig something...if I still have it.

I found a steal on the Minn Kota 'pontoon' V2 on craigslist. Has a 48' shaft and 54 # thrust. It does well for my 24 footer, though I wouldn't know any different. What I like about it is that it is that the whole unit easily slides out of the mount and it can be removed for storage or for the kids jumping off the front. The mount also seems to be a little more compact.
