A Fixer-Upper of a Boat

When Jamie and his wife bought their 2011 Godfrey Sweetwater, it came with a long list of problems: a sand-infested, always-wet carpet, rotting seat bases, deteriorated plywood, and mildew-stained furniture.

All-New Pontoon Fencing, Flooring, and Furniture

Jamie checked out PontoonStuff to gather the supplies he needed to achieve a DIY-friendly overhaul of his flooring, fencing, and furniture layout.

Giving an Old Boat a Facelift

In addition to giving their pontoon a makeover with marine-grade boat seats and all-in-one renovation kits from PontoonStuff, the Russell crew also made a motor and gas tank swap last year. They finished off their work with a totally enhanced electrical system, a new Bimini frame, and a refreshed lighting setup.

On the Fence with Boat Wiring

The most difficult tasks? Aligning the fencing and rewiring the console (both are common challenges!).

At one point, a faulty voltage gauge caused repeated electrical failures. After walking away for two days to take a breather, Jamie pinpointed the problem, replaced the gauge, and the rebuild continued moving forward.

“I finally had to just walk away and get a good night's sleep,” said Jamie. “It seemed like once we overcame this hurdle, things started progressing faster and smoother.”

Our favorite part was definitely seeing our progress every day!

Renovating a Pontoon? Take Your Time!

Jamie’s advice to other boat rebuilders who are working with a true fixer-upper: take your time, think through your decisions, and don’t be afraid to step back before making your next move. The end stage will come before you know it if you keep chipping away a little bit at a time!

As you slow down and enjoy the process, Jamie also recommends watching plenty of videos from West Michigan boating expert, Tom’s Toons, for guidance!
