Top Ten Pontoon Boating Destinations in the United States
By PontoonStuff Staff

Summer is in full swing, and we’re itching to get on the water any way (and anywhere!) we can.
We’ve compiled a list of the most beautiful pontoon boating destinations around the United States to help you plan your next road trip when your local waterways aren’t cutting it!
These lakes are next to breweries, boutiques, and golf courses and offer the most beautiful scenery in addition to the ultimate family-friendly activities. Use this list to plan your next trip, no matter what kind of vacation you’re going on.

1. Lake Michigan, MI
We admit, we might be a little biased, being based in the Great Lakes Region. Lake Michigan is a timeless Midwest gem boasting the nation's longest freshwater coastline, complete with sandy beaches, historic lighthouses, and lakefront towns and festivals straight from a movie scene.
When you’re ready for dry land, the endless state parks, like Sleeping Bear Dunes, offer hiking opportunities to your heart’s content. A West Michigan beach is a perfect place for a bonfire after the sandbar–just make sure you double-check state park regulations regarding fire laws!
Michigan has no shortage of other lakes to explore all summer long (and we consider all of them to be pretty great).

2. Lake Tahoe, CA
Crystal-clear waters, blue skies as far as the eye can see, and the definition of pristine–the shores of Lake Tahoe are some of the most famous in the US for a reason. With its many ramps, public beaches, and equipment rentals (think kayaks, paddleboards, etc.) all around the lake, there’s no limit to the family-friendly activities.
North Lake Tahoe has a lively boutique scene for those who like to explore through shopping, pet-friendly restaurants for your furry first mates, and plenty of art displays for a break from the water.

3. Lake of the Ozarks, MS
A bit of a mouthful, but one of Missouri’s most popular tourist destinations, the Lake of the Ozarks touts a roster of cave tours, plenty of fishing guides, golfing, and numerous free attractions (like state parks, conservation centers, and museums for the family!).
While summer is peak season, with bright blue waves and lush foliage surrounding the water, this lake also has a very lively community that is worth exploring in the fall (with fewer crowds, too).

4. Lake Travis, TX
Lake Travis permits all the classic activities, like sailing, fishing, and watersports, but a big selling point is scuba diving. While many Texas lakes prohibit swimming, Lake Travis’s shimmering waters are open for business and water play of all kinds. The deepest part of the lake can reach depths of 210 feet, which means there’s plenty to explore under the water!
When you’re ready to come up for air, make sure you check out the local events, including the live music scene, farmers markets, and brewery tours!

5. Lake Minnetonka, MN
Clocking in at over 14,000 acres, Lake Minnetonka is not for the faint of heart. That’s a lot of water to fish, boat, and play in! The gorgeous woodlands surrounding this body of water are decorated with plenty of state parks for hiking, cultural and heritage sites for a bit of Midwest history, and plenty of local markets and nightclubs, among other activities for those wanting some on-shore adventure.

6. Lake Okeechobee, FL
Dreaming of superior largemouth bass fishing, luxury boating, and hikes around the wetlands? Lake Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake in Florida, with a rich agricultural history that you can learn about by visiting the local museums and touring the historic Herbert Hoover Dike.
There are plenty of excursions for any taste, like crystal mines and flea markets. The wildlife is known to be particularly exciting, and you can even take guided dolphin watches through the mangroves.
Be warned–this is not a lake for those who love to swim! Due to the wildlife risk, this lake is ideal for boaters who want to stay on board and see the natural sights from a cruising distance.

7. Lake Lanier, GA
Known as “Georgia’s Ultimate Getaway,” Lake Lanier showcases its rich diversity with 700 miles of shoreline and a 60-mile proximity to the hub of Atlanta (for anyone who wants to get their big city fix!).
Find plenty of pet-friendly cottages, gorgeous golf courses, and activities to enjoy all year round (on or off a boat). Plus, the Lanier Islands Waterpark is officially open for patrons from May- August every year.

8. Lake Cumberland, KY
Kentucky summers are known for being beautiful, and Lake Cumberland is at the epicenter of unique summertime activities and iconic markets. Grab yourself a bottle of true Kentucky Bourbon while you’re in town, and sit back for a cruise on the beautiful waters.
Between cave explorations, horseback riding, and plenty of live bluegrass, this community is perfect for those who want to get out on the town after hitting the water.

9. Crescent Lake, OR
Escape to the magical Pacific Northwest at Crescent Lake. Nestled quietly into the Cascade Range and surrounded by thriving forests, Crescent Lake’s glassy waters and sandy beaches are prime locations for boating, fishing, and swimming.
This area is also great for hikers and mountain bikers, or any boaters who love to camp after a day on the water in some of the most beautiful state parks in the country.
Tip: Just make sure you’re aware of bear season between July and September!

10. Lake Wallenpaupack, PA
Kick back and enjoy 52 miles of shoreline, charming lakeside towns, and more excursions than one day can contain. Known for the Wally Lake Fest in August, Lake Wallenpaupack has a rich summer culture of BBQs, watersports, and hiking, and is a perfect option for pontoon boaters looking for a purely family-friendly vacation option with plenty to keep the kids busy.
If you find yourself itching for some winter fun this year, this lake turns into a wonderland with ice festivals and skiing.
