NOTE: This adhesive will not work if you are trying to install vinyl flooring to an aluminum or fiberglass deck. You will require a solvent based glue for this application, water based glue needs to evaporate in order to form a bond and the vinyl with an aluminum/fiberglass deck will not allow the necessary airflow for bonding. You can find solvent based indoor/outdoor glue at any home improvement store.

Installation Tips
- Space your deck screws or bolts 16" apart when securing your decking.

Q: How do I install new vinyl flooring on my pontoon boat?
A: In order to install your pontoon vinyl flooring, you must remove all of the old carpeting and adhesive from the deck of your pontoon. Also, it is important to fill any voids or delaminated areas on your existing deck with wood putty or fiberglass filler. If you do not remove the old carpet and glue or if you do not fill the voids in an existing deck you will feel the imperfections under the flooring and most importantly any left over adhesive may interact with the new glue, preventing it from bonding with the back of the vinyl.
If your deck is clean and the surface area is ready for the new vinyl flooring covering then read on, if you are having difficulty removing your old carpet please see below where we discuss the problems you may run into.
Before applying any glue to your deck, roll your new pontoon vinyl flooring out completely over the deck of your boat so that you can inspect it. Occasionally, vinyl flooring will have imperfections in it which we may miss or it can get damaged in shipping; now is the time to discover any problems. Do not glue your vinyl floor down before you inspect it. Call us immediately if you have any problems so that we can replace the vinyl flooring for you. Once you have the vinyl rolled out and it looks good, fold it in half the length of the deck. For example, if you have a 20' pontoon boat, get in the front of the boat and fold the vinyl over width-wise and do the same in the back, leaving a 4' wide by 20' long section of your deck exposed. Your vinyl flooring will be folded on top of itself on the other side of the deck so that you can apply glue to half of the decking.
By folding the floor covering this way it makes installation much easier, you can apply the glue by standing on the side of the pontoon, without needing to get on your hands and knees. Each gallon of glue will cover a 8' x 12' area, so if you have a 16-24' pontoon boat use one gallon per side, if you have a 25-30' pontoon you will need a total of 3 gallons of glue and will use 1-1/2 gallons per side. Take your first gallon and dump it evenly across the exploded 4' x 20' wide section of the deck. Using a medium nap paint roller spread the adhesive over the deck and make sure that there is full coverage with no empty areas. Be sure to spread glue as far into the center when the flooring is flipped to one side so you don't end up with any areas that are not covered with the glue. Once the glue is applied, lay the vinyl floor out over the entire deck and make sure it is flat and squared up. You will not have much time to work with the vinyl once you lay it on the glue, so be sure it is lined up on the deck properly before you begin applying the glue.
Next you must compress the vinyl flooring onto the lines of glue. The polyester backing will bond to the glue when apply pressure, forming a bond which will hold the vinyl flooring in place once the glue hardens. Use a heavy roller, you can rent a carpet roller or use a heavy pipe to press the carpet down onto the glue. This is the most important step, if you do not press the flooring down hard enough the glue and backing will not bond together, causing it to come up or creating lines and bubbles in your new pontoon flooring.
Q: How do I remove the old carpet? What if it doesn't come off easily or only comes off in small chunks?
A: If your pontoon boat is a 2000 model year or newer, you may experience difficulty when removing the carpet. Newer pontoon boats use a heavier carpeting and a stronger glue than was used in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. Boat builders applied special marine adhesives that provide excellent adhesion and heavier backed carpeting than you see on the older model pontoons. Also, since these boats are newer the carpet and glue have not deteriorated to the point where it is easy to remove them. On most older pontoon boats the carpet will come off fairly easily with some scraping, cutting and tearing. If you find that your pontoon carpet is only coming off in small chunks and that you cannot seem to remove the old adhesive and fibers you can try renting a floor sander or simply replace the decking.
To remove the decking without taking up the carpet, if you choose to replace the flooring, here is how you do it. First, find the seams where the plywood decking meet up, take a razor knife and cut across the floor separating the carpet on each sheet of plywood. If the plywood deck is bolted down, cut the heads off the bolts under the deck and rip the decking off. If the deck is screwed down, use a hole saw and locate the screw heads, cut around each head and tear the decking off. Then use a sawzaw to remove the screws and plywood plugs that are left over. You may find that the cost of the plywood is worth it compared to the time and energy you will spend trying to remove carpet that won't come off.

If my deck is 8' wide, do i just cut the 8' 6" vinyl back?
That is correct. We only offer the 8'6" wide Pontoon Boat vinyl flooring. We would rather have extra than be short on the width.

Why doesn't the kits come in the 80 mil thickness?
We have made a switch to the 50mil Vinyl Flooring thickness. This makes it much easier to work with, while keeping the same durability value.

Is the flooring freeze proof. Our boat sits out on a lift in the winter
I do not believe any Vinyl Flooring is "Freeze" proof. I can tell you that this Pontoon Boat Vinyl is designed to last a verr long time and is extremely durable.

I plan on building a Rettey 8' X 12' pontoon and can get Marine Grade plywood locally. If I order the 80 mil vinyl and glue (separately, not as a kit) does it come with the deck seam tape or can I order that separate?
If you are not purchasing the Pontoon Boat Vinyl Flooring kit, you will need to purchase the Deck Seam Tape separately.

Can I place this vinyl on pressure treated plywood?
Yes. We do recommend using CCA treated Decking as it is going to last much much longer. You should not see any issues when using the Pressure Treated Pontoon Decking.

I have a 97 Tracker, and it has an all aluminum deck. Can I just go directly to the aluminum deck with the glue and vinyl flooring? And do I still need the deck screws?
The glue we offer in this kit will not work with an aluminum deck. You will need a solvent based outdoor carpet adhesive that can be purchased at any big box store. I would recomened adding the parts you need indiviaully. We set up the kits as a convience to the customers but in your instance the screws and glue might not be right for you. There is no discount for buying the kit, as I mentioned they are simply set up for conveince.

When glueing the vinyl flooring, apply glue to one half as you described in the instructions, then lay the vinyl over the glue. Is that right? NEXT: fold the other half over and apply the glue on the other side, then lay the vinyl over the other half - is that right? After that use a carpet roller to press vinyl to glue. Is this process right?
Yes this is usually the best and easist way to install it.

If the new decking is damp, can I still glue and install vinyl?
No, you'll need to wait until it's completely dry. It's very important that the plywood is not wet when you go to install the glue and vinyl down. The moisture will destroy the bond between the glue and vinyl. With vinyl boat flooring it is even more important to make sure the deck is dry. With boat carpeting the moisture can evaporate up through the carpet but with vinyl it is trapped. Please make sure it is completely dry before you install the new vinyl flooring. I would like to replace the aluminum inserts around my fencing when I replace the furniture. Mine is 12" high. Looks like it slides in after sliding the old stuff out? It's probably a universal material but my boat is a 1987 Executive Cruiser...I forget the manufacturer right now.. Aqua Patio maybe? Thank you, Greg
Unfortunately that item won't be exactly universal and whatever material you find you'll more than likely need to score it then trim it down to fit your exact height. We no longer carry the paneling but we are in the process of finding a new manufacturer of custom color sheet metal so I will update you in a email on Tuesday after we meet with them. I apologize we cannot be more helpful at the moment. You may even be able to find a roll of gray or white alunimum siding panel at a home improvement store...that's basically what the material is. We will be in contact soon.

What will get stains off the floor it was left outside and tree leaves left stains on it
We recommend that you use some hot water with dawn dish soap and a heavy duty scrub brush. That should take off the any stains left on your vinyl.

I am installing new plywood on my pontoon. I wanted to seal it with Redgard, then glue the vinyl on the deck. Will that work alright? Also, how do I decide whether to use screws or boots to install my railing? Thank you!
We do not recommend that you seal the wood especially on the side you plan on putting glue on. The glue will not be able to seep into the wood when it is sealed and will simply pool instead of hardening.
When it comes to screws vs bolts it really comes down to customer preference.
We always recommend bolts as they will hold better over time. -
Will the adhesive adhere to oil base painted surfaces or does it half to be unpainted wood surfaces? Thanks
We recommend that you only use the adhesive on unpainted wood surfaces to ensure a proper bond with the carpet.

If I am not replacing my deck, just applying vinyl, do I need to put seam tape under the decking, along the seams?
No you do not but we recommeend checking the exsisting tape to ensure it is still in good condition. This tape wil prevent water from seaking up from underneath your floor and getting your new vinyl floor wet. Now is the time to replace the deck seam tape as you will have realtvily easy aceess to replace it on your pontoon boat.

My railing is fastened to the floor. Do I need to use the fence risers?
You do not need to use our pontoon fence risers but we do recommened using them to help your boat dry out and help prevent any mold from buidling up

My boat is a tritoon 266 (26.5’). Will the 26’ roll kit work?
I recommend buying the carpet separately. We alwasy recommend buying a few feet over the length you have.

Is the 16 ft length exactly that? Is there a couple inches to fold over the end of plywood. Do you rely on the trim to cover edge?
Normally your deck trim will cover it and you would not need a couple inches. But they also add a couple inches to each side.

can you glue this right to an aluminum floor?
Our vinyl can be glued down to the aluminum, but you will need solvent based adhesive instead of the water based we send in our kits. You can find them at most department stores.

My deck is 16’ 4”, do I need to order 17’ or is the 16’ over sized in length?
I would try to order few feet extra. Since we have a 15 foot minimum on our vinyl flooring, if you happen to be short we would have to send that amount of 15 feet.

Does vinyl flooring become hot on bare feet?
We have not had any complaints about our vinyl flooring getting hot to touch.

I plan to use vinyl flooring over a new marine plywood deck. The existing carpeted deck had gaps between the sheets of about 1/16 to 1/8". Should I gap the new plywood or butt it together tight for the vinyl floor?
We recommend putting the plywood up against each other. Make sure you are using Deck Seam Tape underneath the decking with the cross members as well.
