A 1995 Godfrey Parti Kraft with Potential

Steven has always had a soft spot for projects that other people would take one look at and ditch. He enjoys the challenge of restoring boats whenever he can, and his old Godfrey Parti Kraft pontoon was no exception.

After 10 years of ownership, the boat was ready for more than just minor upgrades. Steven wanted something different, custom, and unique to show off at the dock.

Going from a Junk Boat to a Custom Pontoon

The goal wasn’t just to fix things that were worn out. Steven wanted to build a pontoon that reflected his vision for a modern and sleek style, plus, he had major work to do on the electrical system and engine. He envisioned a boat that felt and functioned like new again, and turned to PontoonStuff to help make that vision a reality.

Transforming a Junk Pontoon Boat with a Massive Overhaul

This wasn’t your basic weekend refresh. Steven tackled nearly every area of the boat, including the flooring, boat seats, console, fencing, accessories, and even the trailer over the course of eight months.

Electrical upgrades like wiring and lighting, plus fresh hardware, helped bring everything together and gave the boat a polished and modern feel. According to Steven, “Everything that came from PontoonStuff was self-explanatory, and the wiring harness made it a dream!”

We know from firsthand experience that DIY electrical work and wiring can be a big challenge for boaters, so we loved learning that Steven had a good experience with the help of PontoonStuff electrical accessories.

Challenges of Rebuilding a Boat from the Inside Out

Many of the cosmetic upgrades came together smoothly, but the biggest challenge was a little deeper than new seats and lights. According to Steven, rebuilding the engine was the most demanding part of the project, but also one of the most satisfying.

Luckily, we have plenty of Restoration Resources on our site, plus resources from West Michigan boating expert, Tom’s Toons, to help DIY boaters with some of these more technical challenges.

I like taking old things people think are junk and turning them back into something people would admire.

A DIY Pontoon Boat Upgrade Worth Every Minute

Restoring a pontoon isn’t always easy, but it can be deeply rewarding. Steven’s advice to others? In his words, “Don’t give up! Restoring a boat can be very stressful. Just take a break from the project and start again when you’re relaxed.”

We couldn't agree more–PontoonStuff is on a mission to help DIY renovators of any skill level enjoy their build, own their budget, and fall in love with the process of rebuilding and results that last for years to come.
