Classic Pontoon Boat, Modern Upgrade

Over five months, Michael and his family overhauled their 1999 Godfrey Sweetwater to preserve its fishing legacy while adding just the right touch of fun (AKA a lot of LED lighting!). Read on to learn how they achieved their two biggest boat priorities: staying true to their fishing roots and upgrading the fun factor.

Turning a Party Barge Into a Fishing Vessel

The Nutely family knew they didn’t want a traditional “party barge.” The original 1999 Sweetwater had good bones, but after 26 years, it was showing its age. With the boat docked at their family lake house, they set off to honor the fishing boat culture on their no-wake lake while still making room for comfort and fun.

Rebuilding a Boat from the Deck Up

The project kicked off with a vinyl flooring kit from PontoonStuff, and Michael and his crew forged on to install all new decking, seating, electrical systems, fencing, and accessories, like a Bimini top and ladders.

While the Nutely family was focused on a fishing-forward renovation, they still had some fun with their unofficial party barge by installing some fresh LED lights under the deck, cup holders, and bench seats, plus a new umbrella, snack counter, and custom graphics.

“With the renovations we did, we can fish and still enjoy a party-type atmosphere, especially with all our new lights.” Michael said. “Our neighbors will definitely see us coming!”

To keep the fun in functionality, Michael also added a radio, accessory hatches, and plans to add an anchoring system in the future!

If Boat Wiring is Intimidating, Tutorials Can Help

The most overwhelming part was hands-down the electrical work. “Wiring was intimidating,” said Michael. However, watching Toms Toons, was a big help. With these video tutorials and a clear plan, the project moved steadily ahead.

The family also ran into unplanned struggles removing the original glue and carpet. “We planned to keep the original plywood,” Michael shared, “but after trying to get 26 years of glue off, we decided it had to go.” With a little extra time and patience, and materials from PontoonStuff, they were able to overcome even the toughest parts of their family project.

“Our favorite part was doing it ourselves and being able to step back and admire the finished product.”

The Satisfaction of a Boat Well Built

While there may be a few finishing touches to complete on their boat renovation (like a nice deep cleaning session) Michael’s family is thrilled with the transformation.

Michael’s advice to any fellow pontoon boat renovators is to do your homework, make a plan, and research your resources to get over the difficult stages. It also doesn't hurt to have a four-legged furry friend around to keep you company!
