Care & Maintenance

Nothing is easier to maintain and clean than our vinyl boat flooring. Once installed you'll have a great looking deck without the maintenance required by carpeting. Vinyl flooring will also protect your plywood deck from moisture.

Installation Tips

  1. Space your deck screws or bolts 16" apart when securing your decking.
  2. Apply adhesive to your deck using a medium nap paint roller.
  3. Use a roller or stiff broom to firmly press your new vinyl flooring down into the glue.
  4. Install your fence risers under each bolt that secures your railing to the deck.
  5. Cut the deck seam tape into 8' sections and lay it on top of the aluminum cross members connecting your tubes. The deck seam tape seals the joints where your plywood comes together, preventing water from working its way up under your vinyl flooring.

How To Replace Your Pontoon Flooring

  • Check out our pontoon forum for complete pontoon restorations and learn how to replace the deck and carpet on your pontoon.

Q: How do I install new vinyl flooring on my pontoon boat?

A: In order to install your pontoon vinyl flooring, you must remove all of the old carpeting and adhesive from the deck of your pontoon.  Also, it is important to fill any voids or delaminated areas on your existing deck with wood putty or fiberglass filler.  If you do not remove the old carpet and glue or if you do not fill the voids in an existing deck you will feel the imperfections under the flooring and most importantly any left over adhesive may interact with the new glue, preventing it from bonding with the back of the vinyl.

If your deck is clean and the surface area is ready for the new vinyl flooring covering then read on, if you are having difficulty removing your old carpet please see below where we discuss the problems you may run into.

Before applying any glue to your deck, roll your new pontoon vinyl flooring out completely over the deck of your boat so that you can inspect it. Occasionally, vinyl flooring will have imperfections in it which we may miss or it can get damaged in shipping; now is the time to discover any problems. Do not glue your vinyl floor down before you inspect it. Call us immediately if you have any problems so that we can replace the vinyl flooring for you.  Once you have the vinyl rolled out and it looks good, fold it in half the length of the deck.  For example, if you have a 20' pontoon boat, get in the front of the boat and fold the vinyl over width-wise and do the same in the back, leaving a 4' wide by 20' long section of your deck exposed. Your vinyl flooring will be folded on top of itself on the other side of the deck so that you can apply glue to half of the decking.

By folding the floor covering this way it makes installation much easier, you can apply the glue by standing on the side of the pontoon, without needing to get on your hands and knees. Each gallon of glue will cover a 8' x 12' area, so if you have a 16-24' pontoon boat use one gallon per side, if you have a 25-30' pontoon you will need a total of 3 gallons of glue and will use 1-1/2 gallons per side.  Take your first gallon and dump it evenly across the exploded 4' x 20' wide section of the deck.  Using a medium nap paint roller spread the adhesive over the deck and make sure that there is full coverage with no empty areas.  Be sure to spread glue as far into the center when the flooring is flipped to one side so you don't end up with any areas that are not covered with the glue. Once the glue is applied, lay the vinyl floor out over the entire deck and make sure it is flat and squared up. You will not have much time to work with the vinyl once you lay it on the glue, so be sure it is lined up on the deck properly before you begin applying the glue.

Next you must compress the vinyl flooring onto the lines of glue. The polyester backing will bond to the glue when apply pressure, forming a bond which will hold the vinyl flooring in place once the glue hardens. Use a heavy roller, you can rent a carpet roller or use a heavy pipe to press the carpet down onto the glue.  This is the most important step, if you do not press the flooring down hard enough the glue and backing will not bond together, causing it to come up or creating lines and bubbles in your new pontoon flooring.

Q: How do I remove the old carpet?  What if it doesn't come off easily or only comes off in small chunks?

A: If your pontoon boat is a 2000 model year or newer, you may experience difficulty when removing the carpet.  Newer pontoon boats use a heavier carpeting and a stronger glue than was used in the 70's, 80's and early 90's.  Boat builders applied special marine adhesives that provide excellent adhesion and heavier backed carpeting than you see on the older model pontoons.  Also, since these boats are newer the carpet and glue have not deteriorated to the point where it is easy to remove them.  On most older pontoon boats the carpet will come off fairly easily with some scraping, cutting and tearing.  If you find that your pontoon carpet is only coming off in small chunks and that you cannot seem to remove the old adhesive and fibers you can try renting a floor sander or simply replace the decking.

To remove the decking without taking up the carpet, if you choose to replace the flooring, here is how you do it.  First, find the seams where the plywood decking meet up, take a razor knife and cut across the floor separating the carpet on each sheet of plywood.  If the plywood deck is bolted down, cut the heads off the bolts under the deck and rip the decking off.  If the deck is screwed down, use a hole saw and locate the screw heads, cut around each head and tear the decking off.  Then use a sawzaw to remove the screws and plywood plugs that are left over.  You may find that the cost of the plywood is worth it compared to the time and energy you will spend trying to remove carpet that won't come off.

Ask a Question
  • How long do you have to let glue dry before walking on new vinyl floor? Deck Mate V-508

You should allow 24 hours for the adhesive to fully adhear. Make sure the 24 hours are in at least 65 degree weather.

  • I have a Fisher 18 foot pontoon that has old carpet. The decking is a very hard white poly material not plywood. I like the look of your vinyl material. After removing the old carpet will vinyl work good on this deck and my other question what type of glue should we use?

Yes, our vinyl flooring will work with any flooring type. You would however, need to use a solvent based adhesive. Our adhesive is water based and only works with Plywood.

  • What is the warranty on the vinyl flooring

Our Vinyl Flooring has a 3 year full replacement warranty.

  • Where do you purchase the 84 mil. It states this is 50 mil.

Unfortunately, we do not offer 84 mil. We do offer a 80mil heavy duty vinyl flooring however!

  • Is this similar to hyrdro turf

No, our Pontoon Boat Vinyl Flooring is a marine grade flooring with a backing that is designed to be glued onto Marine Plywood.

  • Can I get it in a longer length? I have a 25’ pontoon

Yes. You can enter the amount of feet you need into the quantity box. The only width we have is 8'6" by however many feet you need to order.

  • We use our pontoon boat for lake fishing. If we catch a fish and it bleeds on the vinyl, will it stain the vinyl? I just read the answer to sealing the plywood before installing the vinyl. I have already sealed the plywood with a polyurethane paint, can I still install the vinyl over it?

I believe a power wash would help get anythng off of the Pontoon Boat Vinyl Flooring. You can still install the vinyl even though you have sealed it. You will need to use an adhesive that is not water based. Ours is waterbased and needs to soak into the plywood, and a sealant keeps it from doing so.

  • , and what is the cost

The cost of the Pontoon Boat Vinyl Flooring depending on how many feet you would like to purchase. It is sold at 24.99 for 1 foot by 8'6" wide.

  • What would you recommend to remove a rust stain from the vinyl flooring? Had a storm come up while working on seating and forgot to pick up my metal square from the floor me bad! Love the way the new floor turned out

We recommend using a power washer witha mild soap. This should be able to take care of the stain you have on the Pontoon Boat Vinyl Flooring.

  • I have a 20x9 pontoon . How will I need and how will it cost me

We offer our Pontoon Boat Vinyl Flooring by the Linear Foot and 8'6" wide. Unfortunately, we do not offer 9' wide Pontoon Vinyl Flooring.

  • Any tips for removing old glued down carpeting??? I expect hard work!

We suggest using a scrapper. This will aloow you get all the excess carpet and adhesive off the plywood. This will make for a clean surface to instal the Pontoon Boat Vinyl Flooring

  • Do you recommend sealing the plywood before installing the 80 ml vinyl?

No we do not recommend sealing the plywood with anything before installing the 80 Vinyl Pontoon Flooring.

  • Do I have to remove all the seats and rails to install

Yes. To get the best application of the Pontoon Vinyl Flooring, you will want to remove all seats and rails to make sure it will last a long time.

  • Can I get a sample of your 80mil vinyl flooring for a pontoon

Hello! Of course! Here is a link that will take you directly to the page where you submit a request. https://www.pontoonstuff.com/pages/request-free-samples

  • I need to replace the carpet on the front of our house boat, the sub floor is aluminum how much do I need for 100 sq foot? Also what solvent do I need to use as the adhesive? Thank you!

We sell out carpet by the foot at 8'6" wide. You will need to make sure you order a 3-4 feet over as we have a 10 foot minimum on all carpet orders.

  • were do u get a solvent base adhesive

You can buy an outdoor carpet solvent based glue at any big box store. We do not carry a solvent based glue because it is very expensive to ship and we would not be able to sell it you at a reasonable price.

  • Is the 80ml vinyl 24.99 a foot? I have a 25 foot Manitou

Yes the 80 Mil pontoon vinyl flooring is $24.99 a linear foot.

  • can this flooring be installed over wood that was covered with resin/fiberglass coating?

Yes it can but you will want to make sure surface of the boat is flat and even. You will need a solvent based carpet adhesive as well.

  • Can I install over current vinyl floor do Ihave to take seating and console off to install?

We always recommend against trying to install new flooring over any type of existing flooring on a pontoon boat. There's no way to know if the new flooring will glue down properly to the old vinyl. If you were to just overlay the new flooring on top of the old flooring you'd need to cut around all the bases on your pontoon furniture and console. I don't have a perfect answer for you... we have had customers do this and some have worked out and other have had problems. The nice thing about the 80mil vinyl pontoon flooring is that it's heavy and so even if you had problems with glue adhesion you probably wouldn't even notice it. Would love to know what you end up doing and how it works out.

  • we are replacing carpet with vinyl, and replaced all wood already. With the seems between the wood, will i have lines in my vinyl flooring? should something be put over the seems and the deck screws

When it comes covering the screws, you want to make sure they are flush against the floor and are not raised. You won't have an issue with lines showing in the flooring due to the plywood so long as you go with our 80mil vinyl pontoon flooring. The thinner 34mil flooring will show the seams.

  • If we have a smaller pontoon boat (6 feet wide) can we cut it or can you custom cut it?

Yes you can cut the material easily with a razor knife to fit the dimensions on your pontoon boat. Unfortunately they only produce this material in 8-1/2' widths but it can be cut without a problem.

  • My boat has 1 inch wide alluminum strips between the plywood with carpet on top. will the strips show thru new vinyl and is the regular glue ok?

They should not show through the Vinyl Flooring. Any marine grade adhesive should work just fine.

  • When I purchased my pontoon boat the wood flooring had a lifetime warranty and the carpet still looks ok but I want to replace with the viny 50 or 80 mils flooring. But it is a job to clean each year naturally. Will someone please tell me the best way to remove it?

Unfortunately, the best way to remove old flooring is to be a thorough as possible. Shortcuts will only cause issues when trying to install the next flooring that you choose. Pull up the Flooring by small sections will be the best way to do it.

  • It appears that when you order samples, you can choose either 34 mils or 80 mills, but when looking at your webpage, the vinyl shown is 50 mils. Is it a different product? Do you know the name brand of the vinyl? Thanks

No, we only offer the 80 mil now. The sample request is now updated to show the correct thickness.

  • Can your vinyl flooring be laid on top of carpet

We always recommend ordering a couple feet over. Since we have a 15 feet minimum, we do not want to have to charge someone for 15 feet if they only need a 1-4 feet extra.

  • Can I use this on my sail boat deck in place of the factory spots that were non skid. I would sand the existing areas down so I would end up with gel coat or fiber glass base to adhere to. This deck will be exposed to constant sun and salt water.

Should be just fine. If it is going on to a fiberglass deck then you will want to use a solvent based adhesive.

  • So if I purchase 22' it is 22 in quantity box and does it come 8' wide it is all one peice
